Who's Who in Modern Traditional Astrology

Ptolemy always reminds me of Kepler and certain moderns: more theories than evidence to back them up. When medieval astrologers deal with him, they are usually trying to explain away his oddities. Montulmo correctly spotted that the Tetrabiblos and the Centiloquium can't be by the same author, but decided that the Tetrabiblos must be the fake because such a great astronomer couldn't have written such poor astrology!

I agree with you there. It's by no means clear to me that Ptolemy actually did practice Astrology, as opposed to simply writing about it, or perhaps to be fair, theorising about it. Firmicus is the same but at least he admits to sharing the ideas of the 'ancients' rather than claiming to be a jobbing Astrology.

The Arab authors seem to rely mostly on Valens and Dorotheus for the basics.

Are you sure about Valens there? I always thought that they lacked Valens, or if they did have access it was to fragments
