Reading illustrated playing cards?

Thanks for that. But but believe it or not those are the unillustrated cards. Well, no, what I mean is that those are simply the traditional playing cards. What's been done recently (a few years ago only I think) is taking those - so that the playing card suits are still just about recognisible - and adding other images on top. Sounds odd I know, but it was actually quite interesting. But can we find them? Not so far!

I read with the Art for the Earth playing cards - they are very very readable, but if i am rightly informed, unfortunately out of print. (I got them as a gift)

Other themed playing card decks often have same cards coming up several times so those are not so fit for reading...

Oh, how interesting Simone! I have Art for the Earth (it was a present also) but I've never tried reading with it. I suppose I may have interpreted the original question rather narrowly as I assumed it to mean decks designed for cartomancy. But if you find other decks work, why on earth (ouch - sorry, couldn't resist :) ) not?

Aeclectic member The 78th Fool has created two different illustrated playing card decks. You can see them here:

Cool! His Alchemical Cards, give the feel/look of a Thoth, but with a regular deck!

Well actually, the first time I saw it, I said - those are readable! tried a reading with them immediately, and it made sense.

But things being as they are with me - reading purely intuitively - any picture is readable to me ;) I could not read purely the suits and numbers on them. I don't know enough about that, except for the occasional idea...

I am using them for my daily reading offer on the competition thread this month, by the way ;)

Are you talking about Transformation Cards?

1. Yes, I have a beautiful set of Transformation cards that have been reissued--Keys to the Kingdom. The older 1992 version:

2. Here's novelty sets:

3. There's Italian novelty cards called Toscana cards available as well:

4. Lee Bursten and others have updated us on a beautiful set that was just released by U.S. Games as well with an oracle system - one of the names is the cards of Ana Cortez (may change this as I look for the thread).

5. Hodge's Astronomical cards with constellation designs are suggestive. I never did anything with them, though.

I'm reading through the Jonathan Dee book of different types of cartomancy techniques for playing cards. (Fortune Telling with Playing Cards). I think I've seen a very reasonably priced book on playing cards cartomancy that has similar information by someone called Foley, but the Jonathan Dee book has more detail..

One thing that I'd really like is an oracle set that uses the Latin-suited cards, as I adore my historical Spanish/Latin-suited Baraja Romantica, with really pretty little decorations on quite a few of the cards. Not a standard poker deck, though..

Hope that some of the above helps.

Lovely cards Cerulean! I found them at Alida but was advised that the shipping was more than the deck price. Had to cancel :(

Been looking for this deck elsewhere = no luck.

Le Fanu

I just got the Carte Tedsche di Jost Amman (1588) by Meneghello in a trade. I was amazed at how vivid the pips are.

It's hard to find images online but there are a few images here which give a sense of the deck. As soon as I opened it up I was amazed at how readable they were...

I have this deck! The German Renaissance, in colour (LS).

Le Fanu, is your Meneghello the same as those at the link you gave, cream & black?

Le Fanu

Yes.. it is. I just saw that there is a coloured one. Mine is typical Meneghello production; square corners, firm card, wax seal, ribbon box...It is beautiful; like antique engravings on stiff card.

It is unnumbered (dates from 1985) so I guess it wasn't a Ltd edition.
