  • 78 Degrees of Wisdom - Rachel Pollack
  • Tarot for Your Self - Mary K. Greer

  • The Encyclopedia of Tarot (volumes I, II and III) - Stuart R. Kaplan
And I have the books for the Legend Arthurian and the Robin Wood decks.

Crowley: The Book of Thoth
--- Perhaps the best of the older occult classics

Huson: The Devil's Picturebook
--- Implausible paganizing fluff

Butler: Dictionary of the Tarot
--- Collects meanings from many sources, and describes the older traditional and esoteric decks. Flawed but useful.

Reed: The Witches' Tarot
--- A deck book acquired w/o the deck

Knight: The Magical World of the Tarot and The Treasure House of Images
--- Two of my favourites. Strongly based in magickal techniques and visualisation. Magical World is the book I would recommend to beginners.

Kaplan: Tarot Classic
--- Has a nice discussion of Tarot history. An average keyword collection, useful for those who use Marseilles styles.

Kaplan: The Encyclopedia of Tarot, vol. 3
--- The only one the used bookstore had, alas!

Pollack: 78 Degrees of Wisdom
--- The best reference I've seen about the Rider Waite Smith style decks; if you use one you should get this.

Louis: Tarot Plain and Simple
--- A Roget's Thesaurus of keywords. Could use more actual text.

Anonymous (Valentin Tomberg): [ii]Meditations on the Tarot[/i]
--- Meandering meditations, from a Roman Catholic, western-mysteries perspective on the Tarot of Marseilles.

Decker/DePaulis/Dummett: A Wicked Pack of Cards
Decker/Dummett: History of the Occult Tarot
--- A helpful antidote to some of the stuff you find in the other books.

I love books. :) My Tarot book collection isn't to large though. Mainly because there aren't a lot that I feel are worth the money. I used to live in a city with a good library system, so I read a lot of books that way. Anyway, here are the books I own that deal with tarot.

Gray, Eden. A Complete Guide to the Tarot
-- Meh, but I still refer to it on occasion.

Pollack, Rachel. Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom
-- My Yule present to myself this year. I'm still working through it, but it has already given me some good insights into the cards.

Wood, Robin. The Robin Wood Tarot: The Book
-- An excellent deck book! It has helped me look at all my decks in a new way. I never really noticed or thought about all the symbolism in cards until I read it.

Junjulas, Craig. Psychic Tarot
-- The book for the Aquarian Tarot. So-so. Good insight into the cards, a bit of a Christian slant. It was my first Tarot book.

Jette, Christine. Tarot Shadow Work
-- I haven't read much of this yet. I'm sort of dipping into it slowly.

Peach, Emily. The Tarot Workbook
-- My second Tarot book. Somewhat the worse for wear. I don't think I ever finished it. It's the book that demands memorization of one part before moving on to the next. Blah! I really should finish it one day though. :)

Greer, Mary K. Tarot for Yourself
-- Excellent book, although I've never finished it. I don't know why.

Phoenix

Let's see if I can remember them all:

Seventy Eight Degrees of Wisdom - Rachel Pollack
Tarot Spells - Janina Renee
Tarot: Your Everyday Guide - Janina Renee
Tarot for a New Generation - Janina Renee
Tarot for All Seasons - Christine Jette
Tarot Shadow Work - Christine Jette
Tarot for Self Discovery - Nina Lee Braden
The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals - Mary K Greer

And from deck/book sets:

A Keeper of Words:The Legend Arthurian Tarot - Anna Marie Ferguson

A Guide Book to the Celtic Dragon Tarot - DJ Conway

The Sacred Circle Tarot - can't rmemeber the author's name!!

That's all I remember off the top of my head.

I never finished it either... ;)
I think it's a great book, but I guess it just wasn't for me...

Hi,

For those of you that have RP's "78 Degrees of Wisdom" why do you/don't you like it? What topics does it cover? Are any of the topics unique to it? Does it deal with the meanings of the occult symbols on RWS style cards?
I'm interested in getting a copy, but am looking for more feedback.

I myself own the following -

*Mary K. Greer - The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals - marvellous book, one of the few that gives 'equal time' to reversed cards.

*Jonathon Dee - Tarot. An Illustrated Guide - uses the 'Ancient Italian Tarot' (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/ancientitalian/index.html) for illustration. Has each type of card (aces, twos, fives, etc) on one page, all suits. Lots of spreads. Nicely done meanings.

*Baird Stafford's Divinatory Meanings of the Cards - moderater of alt.religion.wicca.moderated - internet based, he has a file of the meanings in Publisher
(http://www.capstonebeads.com/Magick/baird.html)
&
*Gale's Mountain Storm Tarot - another awrm moderator - on the same site and also he has a Word file of his partially completed deck/meanings
(http://www.capstonebeads.com/Magick/tarot.html)

^^^^ If y'all are interested in copies of this, ask them if it's ok if I (Heidi Aussie) pass on my copy, to cut down on their transfer time.
I've just started using/looking through these so no comments as yet.

I'm also interested in a 'workbook' type book, eg. exercises to do with the cards (meditation, drawing it out & altering it, whatever!). Can anyone recommend that type of book?

Cheers,

Heidi Aussie

78 Degrees of Wisdom was the first book I bought. I keep going back to it and discovering much that is new. It is worth getting, Heidi Aussie (and welcome to another Australian).

I haven't finished it yet, I only read the chapters on the Major Arcana. Those chapters deal with all the symbolism in the cards, and I liked that a lot. It gives you a lot more background on the cards.
Have you checked the book on Amazon? They have this "Look inside" feature on Amazon which allows you to have a look at some of the pages of the book.

Maybe you should try Tarot for Your Self by Mary K. Greer then, that sounds like the type of book you are looking for.
