Deck suggestion

Pythagoras 1/10

Hey guys, I am finally going to take the plunge and get a tdm style deck (possibly swiss ect). So, I would like some recommendations from you guys about which easily purchasable deck would be best.

One thing in particular I am not sure about is the colouring; I don't want anything too vivid, ie super bright colours. I have thought about the universal and fournier; both of which I really like. But, the coloured pip backgrounds is a real turnoff. To clarify, the fournier and universal are not what I mean by too vivid, i quite like there colouring, I simply dont like the idea of coloured pip backgrounds.

So. if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them! Also, I can't find anything about this deck

Does anyone know anything about it?

I'm pretty sure the one in the Amazon link is this one:

It's the deck that was published for so long by BP Grimaud only now by France Cartes. If you "Click here for more images" at the Somerville site it shows the cards. They have the same back as the one at Amazon and both have French titles. I ordered one of these from Somerville many moons ago and from what I remember the stock is thinner than the Grimaud versions, and the reds tend a bit toward the orange side. Somerville's pictures are pretty close to what they actually look like.

You might like this one by Il Meneghello. It's a Swiss pattern.

Here's a site that has better pictures of it.

Or Meneghello has another Swiss pattern that's not as cleaned up.

Here's an Ebay listing with a few pictures.

There's always the Tarot Classic. Colors are pretty vivid but very easy to acquire.

Thanks for the comments so far guys! I love the Il Meneghello, a bit out of my price range however lol. I am however intrigued by the tarot classic. I don't think it is so much vivid colours I don't like, as much as how modern decks seem to be ultra clear and crisp with the colouring, or something! I cant really explain it haha.

Does anyone here like the classic tarot? Does it have any short falls? Again, thanks for helping me out; the world of traditional designs gets a bit complicated!

I wrote the review for the Tarot Classic a few years ago: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/tarot-classic/review.shtml

...and it's still one of my favourite TdM style decks. To me it has a lot of character (especially the very expressive court cards) and an overall friendly feel to it. The colouring is pretty crazy, but then again it also gives it a naive charm (as if it's been coloured in crayons by a child). I love it's 70s vibe. Naming the coins 'pentacles' is unfortunate, but I've got past that.

I think i'm going to go for the heron conver. One thing though, I can't tell from the scans, but are the colours a bit pale or are they reasonably saturated?

Also, do you know if there is anywhere selling it in the uk. At the moment i'm going to order it from amazon.fr with an 8 euro delivery!

I have a Tarot Classic bought back in the '70s. The reds are more magenta and the blues are more cyan or teal. The backs are the most boring I've ever seen, and the coloring is a little amateurish. On the plus side, it has the best-handling card stock of any deck I own, kind of waxy but not at all slippery. Of course, that could have changed by now.

It's probably the most popular TdM in the world. It was first published by Grimaud in 1930, and it has been in print (essentially continuously) since then. It is a Conver restoration. The term Tarot de Marseille was probably coined by Paul Marteau, the deck's author. The deck is probably the most important factor contributing to the continued popularity of TdMs. It's one of my favorite decks and, in my opinion, deserves to be in everyone's Tarot collection, at least for its historical importance.

The problem with the recent editions of the Héron Conver is that the beautiful emerald green has become inconveniently a not very nice muddy brown. Otherwise the colours are reasonably saturated, it's the engraving that is not too sharp. The size is also smaller. In another thread, you can find 2 of my posts where I have put some faithful scans of the original Conver, Héron's first edition and others (including LS, Grimaud...) :

The term Tarot de Marseille was probably coined by Paul Marteau, the deck's author.
Though of course Marteaus book surely greatly contributed to make the term Tarot de Marseille popular it seems that this term appears first in Papus book from 1889 "Le Tarot des Bohémiens".
In my facsimile copy of the book, I can find the term Tarot de Marseille at page 88, chapter X.
