Etruscan tarot: Four of swords

poopsie

Description in booklet: A hunter and his dog are silent and still in the woods, waiting.

The Etruscan 4 of Swords takes a radical shift from the stabbings of the 3 of swords.

Here, the scene totally changes -- we are now in the woods and we see a hunter and his dog, in an interesting body position -- the dog is crouched down but looking as if he is ready to pounce. The hunter's left leg is knelt down but the right leg is about to stand up ... he holds his bow in preparation for something. Both are facing west.

After the pain of the three, we are now summoned to a different mindset - that of preparation and caution, and a calculated pause. The theme of the Etruscan 4 of Swords is stillness ...

The stillness is one of contemplation, anticipation of what surprises the future will bring. However, if we look at the perspective of we as hunters - there are two ways to look at this card:

We may be waiting quietly for something, which is why we are alert - a prey perhaps? A golden opportunity? a blessing? An answer to our prayer? A granted wish? If this is the case, then our waiting and stillness is in anticipation of something positive, something that will benefit us, or...

We may be waiting quietly because we are afraid, hence we are hiding ... we do not want to be seen. We do not want others to know what our next steps would be -- only we and our conscience and ego would know. Fear is something we are uncomfortable to show and reveal to others which is why we sometimes mask this with a face of strength. We take both an offensive and defensive position just to ensure that our mind and heart are protected and safe.

When we draw this card, the hunter in us may stimulate a few reflections:

a) what are we preparing for? Have we identified what we would like to accomplish as regards issues that are affecting us?

b) Are we relaxed in our own stillness? If not, then what anxieties do we have that puts us in an offense-defense position?

c) Who can help us and support us?
