Any opinions or thoughts?

shamangoddess

My aunt just gave me a deck that she has had for years but never used (the cards themselves were still in their plastic wrap).
From what I can tell they are the Tarots of Marseilles (Burdel) with the brownish red w gold plaid on the back. She also gave me the original companion book that came with them Tarot Classic by Stuart R. Kaplan.
The copyrights are a bit funny though...the box says 1974, the little booklet says 1971 (the year I was born) and the book says 1972.
Should I cleanse them? How are they to work with (general idea)? Any other thoughts?

TIA

Tarot de Marseille Suisse

This Tarot of Marseilles deck is based on a deck produced by Claude Burdel in 1751. The initials CB can be seen on the front of the chariot on card seven and also on the two of cups. The original cards were woodblock prints and stencil colored by hand. (J.B.)

This tarot is in fact a reproduction by the Scarabeo house of the Tarot of Marseilles Suisse created by Claude Burdel Cartier and Graveur on paper with the weapons of Freiburg with the following mention:"Cartes fine made by Claude Burdel privileged Master-cartier their Sovereign Excellence of Freiburg remaining with the street of the Hospitals in front." don't bother cleansing them - they've been kept all this time, just for you. Cool starter deck...

the others have different colours, and there is no initials CB on either of those cards.

i also found this in the forum...

"The (US Games) Tarot Classic which I have is not a Marseilles deck, but the very similar looking Swiss Schaffhouse. I realise that many claim that this latter is a Burdel deck, but I think this is mistaken. One place you can see some cards of the Schaffhouse is here... http://www.learntarot.com/cldesc.htm "

this is definatley the deck I have...the two of pentacles says...
Fabrique de Cartes a Schaffhouse
aka Card factory in Schaffhouse

and "The initial M on the four of Coins stands for Muller - AGMuller is the Swiss publisher"...that i do have!!!

A wonderful deck to have handed down to you.

The colours in this deck are very pleasant to my eye and the size is perfect for shuffling.

I have the book too, but I tend not to go by the card meanings from it. I do like the snippets of historical information that Kaplan provides at the beginning though.

I hope you enjoy using it. :)
