Gods Study Group... FAQ

Kiama

Okay, it has ben suggested that this Study Group get off to a flying start, so, just as a reminder, I'll post the guidelines...

1) You pick the pantheon you want to 'do' and notify by posting on this thread. (This is done)

2) When we have enough people, or we are pretty sure nobody else is gonna join, we will begin. (This is done)

3) I give you the 'type' of deity to research within the pantheon you have chosen, eg- Mother Goddesses, and I post that title as a thread. Here's the list of possible 'types' of deities we could do. Again, feel free to discuss these, criticise, and offer ideas!

Creator Deities
Triple Deities
Mother
Father
Virgin (Both male and female, although prominently female)
Crone (Both male and female, basically the wiseman/woman aspect)
Divine Child
Dying and Ressurecting Godman
Lover (Bothe male and female)
Skilled Magician/Shapeshifter/Soothsayer
Trickster
Death deities and guardians of otherworlds/Destroyer Deities
Messengers (Could possibly be covered with Magicians?)
Elemental Deities (Earth, Air, Fire, Water Deities)
Chief Deities ('Leaders' of the Gods')
Deities of Luck/Chance/Fate
Deities of the home, birth, children, family
Deities of War
Physician/Healer Deities
Deities of Knowledge/Justice/Law and Order
Deities of Agriculture/Farming
Sun/Moon/Stars Deities

4) You get about 1-2 weeks to research that topic within your pantheon. (Number of weeks depends on title! Creator Gods will take more time than Gods of the Sea, for instance!)

5) When you are finished researching, you 'report back' to the rest of us, with what you have found, by posting it under the thread that I put up. If you finish researching before the 'deadline', that's fine, post it up early!

6) We discuss what we have found out, comparing the different pantheon's view of the 'types' of deities, their similarities, etc...

7) We do another topic!

What you could include in you research:

- Stories, myths, legends
- Similarities to any other pantheons, although this may come out in the discussion later on
- What they mean with respect to the whole pantheon
- Their importance to the culture that believe in that deity
- Any traditional practices/cult/festivals they have
- Symbols, eg- The Crone Goddess Cerridwen in Celtic mythology has the symbol of a sow, and a cauldron.

I'm off now to post the first thread in the Gods Study Group!

If you have any questions, just post them on this thread.
