Photographing Tarot Cards

Obsydian

I searched and couldn't find a topic so I apologize if I'm just blind.

I like to photograph my cards for my blog, but one of my decks has a very glossy finish.

I have a lamp above my desk, and I lay out my cards on there. If I want to get a good picture, I have to be above the cards. This creates a bad shadow of my hands and camera. If I use flash for that, I get a huge glare.

How do some people get such beautiful card photos?

Using a light on either side at 45 degrees to the cards will give you good, reflection-free illumination. You can use just one light, but for large spreads the picture will be noticeably darker on the away side. Or, if you have a scanner, scan them.

Scanning probably is best, but if you don't have a scanner you might try indirect natural light. The images might not be crystal clear, but should eliminate that glare and be good enough for your blog.

A polarizing filter can reduce (or eliminate) reflections and glare from non-metallic surfaces.

Whether you can use one without too much jiggery-poker will depend on the camera you're using.

Thanks for all the tips everyone! I'll try what I can out. :)

What kind of camera are you using?
