Visconti: Fortuna

Ross G Caldwell

I have posted the images I have found of Wheels of Fortune connected to the Visconti family at
http://www.geocities.com/anytarot/fortuna.html

Fortune turning her wheel was a very widespread image in medieval Europe, and it was used in many different contexts, from illustrating Boethius' "Consolation of Philosophy" to the Story of Renart the Fox, moralizations about the rise and fall of the mighty, and the general changefulness of Fortune.

Some members of powerful families whose power came as much through chance as cunning, must have thought often about Fortune.
