dragonfly

I had an interesting thing happen today while I was out running errands. I pulled into the parking lot of a shopping center and as soon as I was out of the car, this dragonfly zoomed by me, all around me and then flew off.

The whole time I was walking into the store and then again as I came out all these dragonflies kept appearing and they were HUGE! I mean, at first I thought it was a hummingbird, because the body seemed to be the same size as a hummingbird! :bugeyed: They kept flying all around my head and now and again one of them would seem to stop and it was almost as if they were looking at me. I know it sounds ludicrous, but there ya go--it was like that!

I've only had this happen to me once before where there were tons of dragonflies flying all around, and that was when the husband was mowing our grass on the tractor. I was on the deck and noticed a cloud of something--and wondered what it was. So, just as he began to drive through this 'cloud', I was walking out to see what it was as well--and we both realized it was all these dragonflies! HUGE dragonflies.

I looked up the symbolism of dragonflies back then and I remember it now, which seems to fit for me right now-with what I'm going through.

Dragonflies symbolize a time of change/transformation. They are messengers that inspire you to pay attention to your intuition. Dragonflies are also very powerful meditation tools, and they are also a sign of good luck, harmony, prosperity and peace coming to you.

so, anyway, I recently made a change on my spiritual path that is just beginning for me-though it's been in the background for me for awhile now. I've tried to get going on it and always came to a block that would keep me from moving forward. Just recently--within the last few weeks, those blocks seem to have fallen away and I'm ready to push on and move forward towards my newest spiritual goal that I've also been led to by my spiritual guides. I finally feel ready for it 100% and I think that perhaps these dragonflies are also another sign for me that now is the right time that I don't have to worry about anymore blocks. The door has been opened for me and I'm ready now to go through it, happily and confidently.

What does Dragonfly mean to you? Other insects which go from pupa to a different form are also associated with transformation such as butterfly so looking at the other aspects of this creature would help me to understand it's message for me.

Before taking the above at face value, I always ask why. Why does a dragonfly 'mean' good luck, harmony and prosperity etc? What is it about the creature that suggests that?

Whereas a butterfly eats either nothing or nectar, the Dragonfly feeds on other insects. It is an incredibly agile and accurate killing machine who's basic design has not needed to change for millions of years. It is a living dinosaur! Often brightly coloured, the colour you saw may have significance to you. It has 2 sets of wings working in different directions giving it incredible maneuverablility and precision but it only lasts a few weeks. The culmination of it's life lived mostly underwater as a nymph, this last stage enables it to procreate and carry on the species. It has gone from a sedentary state of feeding and growing to having wings (how amazing must that be for a creature to transform into a winged lord of the air?)

It has changed state, from that of earth and water to fire and air which suggests self realisation or awakening.

Dragonfly myths from around the world may help to understand what message dragonfly brings, the Zuni myth about Dragonfly for example.

It's good to know why a creature has an association with it then we understand the fuller message.

Very cool celticnoodle!

And thanks for the links, Milfoil! I will enjoy exploring those!

Dragonfly holds a special place in my heart. Dragonfly came into my life the summer after my husband passed away. That's when I first learned of their whole life cycle, and it resonated deeply with what I was going through at the time. Transformation into a new "being" and the fact that this transformation completes it's life cycle. I felt like I had been the ugly nymph living underwater........whole 'nother story for another time.

Living and spending time near waters, like I do, I see them quite frequently and I always have to stop to observe and enjoy them. They never seem to be around when I have the camera out, though.......

thanks for the responses.

Yes, dragonfly seems to show up for me during a huge transformation in my life--(both times). the funny thing is that this last time I was not close to any water! Miles from the nearest body of water, so seeing so many of them flying around me was really odd.

I saw the green dragonflies--and they seemed really huge to me. I'm guessing these are a healing transformation symbolism for me--which is what I'm experiencing right now in my life.

:D Amazing! After posting on this thread, Friday I was floating around on my blow-up arm chair in the lake and a dragonfly landed on my forearm and floated with me for several minutes!

Very cool.....we talked.......

This is the time of year, when the Dragonflies are on the wing by the thousands. At any given time we have around 30 of the huuuuge Darners either zooming around our deck or just resting anywhere from the rim of my tea mug to the tip of my nose. :bugeyed:
The smaller Damselflies are mating and a joy to watch.

Yes, the big ones are here too, one was zipping around the garden - a massive brown one with a 5 or 6" wingspan. Huge! Not a shiny, bright coloured one, but dull and brown but what it lacked in glamorous colour, it made up for in size.
