End of the World - New World Order

Milfoil

We keep hearing predictions and messages over the centuries and even millenia about how the Earth is coming to an end, we are living in the end of times etc. The first followers of Jesus including Paul thought this and taught it only to abandon it when clearly the world didn't end. Same with every other prophet of doom over the centuries. Now we have the Mayan calendar predicting a new age yet I don't see anything spectacular happening.

When I think about it, there have been so many natural disasters and invasions, hard times, droughts, famines, wars, floods, you name it, that each culture at some point must have thought this was the end of the Earth or life as we know it. Other than an impending change in the glaciation of Europe, a return to a colder, drier climate over the next few centuries which will happen at some point, it is difficult to see what all the fuss is about.

I know, everyone keeps talking about the spiritual aspect of 2012 or how we as a race (humans) are coming into a new age but really - is this what we observe around us? Do you see it?

I think there have always been this many natural distasters, droughts, famines, etc. but that it's only in recent decades that we've known about them. The internet and the thousands of TV channels we now have, have made us all far more aware of what's going on round the world than we ever used to be.

When I was a teenager, my mum got involved in this Irish Marian Cult. Loads of people round here did, although not to the same extent. It was all based on the apparitions of Mary in Bosnia, who was supposed to have predicted the end of the world. On a specific date, the seas were going to boil and the earth was going to crack, and hell on earth was going to descend. Only those Catholics who believed in the apparitions where going to be saved. At 14 years old, with the date of the end of the world fast approaching, I was utterly terrified.

When the world didn't end, I was both relived and furious! And I promised myself I'd never be taken in by anything like this again.

So I don't buy into the 2012 stuff at all. Just another year.

Not just 2012 though, I wonder whether somewhere deep down in our collective psyche, the human race actually wants something else, the hand of God, to change things because life is so difficult and such a vast and confusing set of problems that to have some kind of End of World where we either die or are 'saved' to some alternate reality.

I want to believe that there can be global, positive change but so far there is little to substantiate that from the human side of things.

Yes. I think this is where the end of the world phenomena that rears it's head every couple of years comes from. But I think that it's an illusion, or perhaps just a way of coping out of fixing the problems we created in the first place.

It isn't the world that comes to an end, it is civilizations that come and go.

the Mayan calendar was circular rather than linear like the one most of us use today. December 2012 is when they calculated for a new start to the cycle. But hype sells junk...even Mexico has a countdown readerboard... and they know better but laughed and said it is a bandwagon

To be confronted with your own mortality....
In an end time scenario
where you personally can do NOTHING to prevent it
from happening...
It rips apart the every day drudgery
It floooooods you with stress hormones - fight or flight,
It gets your adrenaline pumping
and you feel VERY much ALIVE
and you go and diggggggg a bunker....
and fill it with .....???
Tarot cards and disposable cutlery and........ fill in the blanks.....
..........
...........
...........
See!
Everyone would put something different into their bunker -
- or build no bunker at all but move into the Brazilian rain forest,
because that has a magical ring of protection around it and......
NOW we are arguing !!
Now we are talking to each other,
Everyone has an idea,
an opinion....

... Some are not participating.
The Canada Geese on our pond here are breeding.
The nest has 2 Eggs already
Outside a Snowstorm is moving in.
The Birds will not abandon their nest.
They KNOW of the future.
I trust their "inner Knowing"
I am not participating.
I am a part of the Universe.
the Universe is still here -
and will be when the snow storm
and the latest doomsday scenario blows over.....
:)

Yes, whether it is the end of the world or a new world order, the profound change that so many prophets or systems (like the Myan one) threaten/promise never seems to materialise. We make films about aliens landing, viruses that wipe out 99% of mankind, comet strikes and anything else to shake up our boring, mundane take on life but what we really learn from Nature is that all change, whether swift or slow, creates the right conditions for new growth, new life and evolution. Adapt and survive - not survive and continue as before or ascend or change into an enlightened being . . .

I figure that if the world (or civilization, or pistachio ice cream) is going to end on December twenty-somethingth 2012 - that there is nothing I can do to stop it ~ so why worry? Eat, Drink, and be Merry - for tomorrow we may die. I'm going to party like it's 1999!

And when we wake up the day AFTER December twenty-somethingth 2012 and the world (and civilization, and pistachio ice cream) is still here - I'll have another party to celebrate THAT, too!  :p :p
