I met a traditional healer the last two days, though it was brief.

HOLMES

the last two days there was a traditional healer at the health center , he worked with his wife and he was one year older then me.
in fact for me when I looked at him it was a mirror of how I could of been if i followed my traditions and shamanism i think.

so yesterday I went to talk to him and we talked about the various things in the limited time we had.
1. sweat lodge he does it in the day time.
there was a option for him to do a sweat lodge in the evening as that is how we do it around here I guess. I said to him " that must be yours guys beliefs then eh ? " when he said they do it in the day time,, and he said " no it isn't our beliefs but we dont know what comes in the night".

the reason why I asked about is , I was outside listening to some discussion about the secreteary and one of the workers if they wanted a lodge tonight,, and the worker said no as there wasn't a comfirmation.

2. shaking tent in the day time as well.
so i quickly asked I guess you guys would prefer to do the shaking tent in the day as well and they agreed.

ohh so when i introduced myself yesterday I asked what is it that they do,, as previously the other traditional healers did healing,,for one in kenora i stood on a white while she prayed and gave me some herbs for example.
he said they work with the spirits to take out things.. after i asked if it was like shamanism where you use a rattle to go on journeys and take out spirit attachements.
so once he started talking about that, i listened to any jewels..

it was their first trip to eagle and their first trip out of his home reserve which I think is manitoba .

I watched as he packed up the stuff (they spend some time after clients to close down the energy, spirits etc, in the room ) , and there was a big plastic continer with some dirty water and i think matches, (not sure ) that they put the bad medicine/energy.

as i talked a bit about what I do,, the wife said "sounds like a medium " to which I said i did some research on it,, but havent' really worked on it,, as next time they come i would to work on any blockages to that.

so as he got ready he said "once he was trying to do too much in the lodge and the bear got mad and growled which was heard inside and outside of the lodge.. " to which i compared it to the bible story of the moses and how he struck the rock to make the water come out and that is why he didnt' go into the promised land. (least what i remember from the picture bible ).

and we smiled and he said "one thing that isnt' talked in there is to love your mate." , and i i said it was probaly the old male mind set of "honor and obey "..

i mentioned we have a massage table over there packed up and he looked behind him and said "really "? and they actually used it today ,, and he said yesterday that in their tradition they work on people on a bed.

as we walked outside i talked briefly to his wife and how she didn't want to use herbs in a story for you dont' know if the woman was on her time when she picked the herbs or if the person was drunk.
she then mention she and her husband hasn't dranked in 17 years.. as she walked out..

then her husand and i walked out and he talked about how people are scared to get worked on,, and i said "it is due to lack of education about it " and shared how i get called witch doctor once or twice long ago,.
that came about for i made a voodo joke and he said,, "it is amazing how many people say it is voodoo",, and i said really "?

when I was waiting to talk to him i reads in a magazine outside that talked about the residential schools were like..
in particular was a story about a boy who wasn't allowed to talk to his sister even if they were in the same room, and how often they had to say the rosary which was quite a bit.
so with that fresh in my mind what we talked about rang true.

the major thing for me is that it isnt' old peeps doing it but a man who is relatively young ,, 38 and the possiblity of him coming to give workshops to eduate people on that.

in closing he was busy yesterday and today going from 9 to 6ish when he came out of the room and so due to the long drive he had to make to go home,, all we really did was shake hands and acknowledged each other.

(though i made sure the worker knew about the sweat lodge and shaking tents during the day so it could be possibly be set up for the next time ).

Milfoil

Perhaps, only IF the Spirits had called you to do this work and you had gone through the crisis and undertaken to follow where the Spirits lead but they didn't so his/their path is different to yours.

so yesterday I went to talk to him and we talked about the various things in the limited time we had.

This is interesting and sounds as though they have specific ways of starting off with Sweat and shaking tent which is more controlled and gentle. IF someone is then seen as psychologically and spritually strong enough to face the 'night' and what it might bring to them, then that could be arranged I would guess.

ohh so when i introduced myself yesterday I asked what is it that they do,, as previously the other traditional healers did healing,,for one in kenora i stood on a white while she prayed and gave me some herbs for example.
he said they work with the spirits to take out things.. after i asked if it was like shamanism where you use a rattle to go on journeys and take out spirit attachements.

How were his clients? Did they experience healing? Was he someone you would send a client to? Lets not forget that all this is about the client, their pain and suffering, not the healer as such.

as i talked a bit about what I do,, the wife said "sounds like a medium " to which I said i did some research on it,, but havent' really worked on it,, as next time they come i would to work on any blockages to that.

What was their tradition? Did they say?

as we walked outside i talked briefly to his wife and how she didn't want to use herbs in a story for you dont' know if the woman was on her time when she picked the herbs or if the person was drunk.
she then mention she and her husband hasn't dranked in 17 years.. as she walked out..

Was she making this statement at you, for you or in general? I've heard about not picking herbs when a woman is on her Moon time, it would be interesting to know more about this. Was she commenting about the alcohol because it was a problem for them before and now, 17 years on, is not or because she felt that you needed to hear it?

then her husand and i walked out and he talked about how people are scared to get worked on,, and i said "it is due to lack of education about it " and shared how i get called witch doctor once or twice long ago,.

Yes, this is a BIG problem isn't it? Too many people traumatised by the separations, pain, physical and psychological abuse of the church and state towards the 1st Nation tribes in the past. So much pain and so much healing to be done. People ARE scared and with good reason. There is much confusion. This is an area of deep healing which he is clearly part of and understands/feels.

the major thing for me is that it isnt' old peeps doing it but a man who is relatively young ,, 38 and the possiblity of him coming to give workshops to eduate people on that.

in closing he was busy yesterday and today going from 9 to 6ish when he came out of the room and so due to the long drive he had to make to go home,, all we really did was shake hands and acknowledged each other.

(though i made sure the worker knew about the sweat lodge and shaking tents during the day so it could be possibly be set up for the next time ).

Did you ask him HOW he came to do this work, how the Spirits called him, how he managed to train and how difficult it had been? Was it compassion which drives him to offer healing?

gregory

Sound as though you could learn a lot from this guy. Different ways can enlighten our own path so well. Will you be able to meet / "talk" again at all ?

HOLMES

thanks for the replies

thanks gregory ,,
we should have time to talk more, even if he doenst' come back he is on my facebook list though we didnt' talk yet on it.

spirits called me

you might say they did, for I had dreams of white wolves, bears, and wendigo from 15ish to about 25, I also had my mom on my back since i was 15 to learn the traditions.
it is just that i answered it in my own way aka the other teachings which was mostly bec ause i didn't know the language..
however he is a mirror of where i could be in 10 years if I learn from him.

to face the night
I don't know if it is to face the night, it could be the way they were taught or just came upon on their own. he did mention he follows his spirits guidance so as a guess it could be they told him not to,, i hope to get deeper info on that.

all about the clients.
well first of all i went there to see how he would be if i was a client in the future so i went there to see if i resonated with him enough to book an appointment down the line.
before hand i asked my uncle robert the local elder about him,, he said he was good. and he did cermony healing.
for me that is a wide spectum so I had to meet him as i truly didnt' know what kind of healing it would be.

so it is not really protocol to go and ask people about their session unless it was someone i knew,, i dont know who he saw that day, or the next day. the one woman who took her son to see him that i asked about said "he was good, " then " he told us to see another medicine man".

myself baed on how we talked just on that, i would send clients to see him.

what was his tradition. ?

I didnt' ask if he was ojibwe , cree or soto he lives in manitoba so he could be oji-cree,, when I feel the energy is right i will send him some questions.

her statement.

it wasnt' directed to me but was explaining her path to me and another lady.

this is a big problem .

yes, you understand it well, that is just one of the big problems that still affects the people as it was passed on to the generations to come,, the symptoms are now in the third generation of kids in one family i know as the grand kids of the now deceased people who went to the residential school are now 22 and 19 and one has their own kid.
there is a lot of residential school education being done for today youth dont' really understand how it was. i am reminded of the movie antone fisher where it was looked at how the slavery still affects the people generation today.

why he does, how he learned..

i didnt' ask how he learned, for i was more focused on what he does, and if he works with the spirits and also making him feel at ease for when i talked about the sweat lodge at the time it was because they were wondering about it at the beginning and so i wanted to make sure he knew that they figure he didnt' want it as he didnt' say yes or now.

i figure though it is because of compassion and that he wants to do it,, not everything is a calling for it could be just an geninune love of the tradition but that is my own thought and guess.

it is my sincere hope that next time he comes i get to sit in some sessions and observe,
and some of the questions you asked milfoil I will ask him down the line.
