Mayan Prophecy Calendar - what's your take?

tarotbear

Already today the airwaves are filled with this being the one-year countdown to doom, as predicted by the Mayan Calendar 3,400 years ago.

Personally - looking at the changes in weather, the planet, destructive storms and tsunami - I would almost say the Mayans are pretty spot-on. However, since the dawn of man someone has been shouting that the world is going to end next Saturday at 1:22 p.m. - and we're still here. How do we know that scientists have even deciphered the calendar correctly?

So, should we all be partying like it's 1999 , or should we just assume that everything is going to be 'business as usual'?

PS - Little technological-idiot me posted a poll about this in a separate thread - so don't forget to vote in that thread! :D

Business as usual. The Mayans have many calendars, this is thier "long calendar" When it ends a new one starts like our calender.

Mayans make lots of references to dates that fall well past 2012. The idea of 2012 being the end of the world apparently came from New Ager José Argüelles in his book "The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology"

I should have posted a poll ......

Actually, to be honest, I'm a little uneasy about it because it's not just like the typical predictions made by soothsayers. This one seems to have some scientific back-up, particularly in terms of the planetary alignment.

I do believe though that no one can actually predict the exact date of when the world would end. But at the rate our world has been experiencing natural disasters, these appear to be like portents of doom although admittedly, we are also partly responsible for why our world is experiencing these disasters ... we abused Mother Nature.

Anyway, despite my anxieties, I'll still party ... there are still blessings amidst crisis that we can be thankful for.

I'm not into prophecy and doom. I don't care if it all ends tomorrow, or never. I think we should be living each day in a way that "knowing" tomorrow is It would not cause an effect in our behavior.

I agree with the Crowned One, everything is changing all the time and the Mayan calendar is cyclic just like life (based upon the cycle of the Pleiades) . Every age has it's changes. Only 150 years ago we had a mini ice age where the Thames in London regularly froze over each winter and fairs were held on the frozen river.

Does any of this have to do with New Age thought on the 'Aquarian Age'? I've never really understood the Aquarian Age thing, and would appreciate an explanation if anyone can. I will start a new thread if needed... :)

No, not as far as I know. The 2 best things about the Aquarian age are the day my Dad told me this Song was for me. I was about 5 and I believed him... and the tarot deck.

As far as I understand the age of Aquarius has a heck of a range from 1440's AD to about 3590 AD depending who you read. I am going with either 1965 or 2080 as its start dates..

"In 1929, the International Astronomical Union defined the edges of the 88 official constellations. The edge established between Pisces and Aquarius technically locates the beginning of the Aquarian Age around the year 2600. Many astrologers dispute this approach because of the varying sizes of the zodiacal constellations and overlap between the zodiacal constellations"
