Na'ib & TDM

John Meador

"In fifteenth-century Italy, in France, and in Spain from 1371 to this day, cards were referred to as naibi, nahipi, naips, naipes, naibbe, naibbi. "

Do 16th/17th C. references (particularly French) exist associating or identifying TDM cards with "naibi, nahipi, naips, naipes, naibbe, naibbi"?

What is the French term?

Hi

Michael writes :NAHIPI
“A certain Jacques Jean (son of a Marseilles merchant) bound for Alexandria, Egypt, pledged to his friends Honorat d’Abe and Micolas Miol, before a notary, not to gamble or play games of chance on his journey: primarily taxilli (the greatly condemned dice), but also scaqui (i.e. chess which actually enjoyed a good reputation) and NAHIPI. The pledge to forsake gambling was a well-known obligation in Mediaeval juridical practice, especially as far as dice were concerned. But here the novelty was the inclusion of cards among the unacceptable games.” (Ortalli 176; K I:24; B 45) This item comes from “the records of Laurent Aycardi, a notary of Marseilles.” (HG 224.)

Hi Alain,
Thanks for pointing that out. That reference seems to be 1381- I was wondering if references might appear in the late 1500's/ early 1600's that seem to associate TDM cards with nahipi.

"In 1536, seeking an alliance with the Ottoman Turks, Francis I sent Postel as the official interpreter of the French embassy to the Turkish sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in Constantinople. Postel was also apparently assigned to gather interesting Eastern manuscripts for the royal library."

As far as I know, Postel never mentions cards in his manuscripts, but it seems possible na'ibs might have seemed a collectible for Francis I.
