Tarot de Marseille - Marteau Grimaud, informations for collectors

coredil

Hello,

here are some graphic informations, some scans and a few personal comments for collectors who appreciate or love the TdM from Paul Marteau edited by Grimaud.
All the decks described are from my collection.
In no way does this description pretend to be complete.
I just found interesting to see how various the different printing of this deck seem to be and thought that these informations could possibly be usefull for people who are searching for this deck.

I already posted some of these informations in several posts before.
In this thread is "all" I know + scans.

I would also like to know more about the earlier printing.
In particular I would be glad to have more informations about the deck number 01 and the deck number 02.
I got 01 without box or LWB, and though I have a box for 02 there is no date on it.
So if someone knows something, please share your information.
I am aware that there are some threads on deck 01.
For example ATF member Rachel Nguyen described this deck on this thread:
http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=36869&page=1&pp=10&highlight=grimaud
But it still stays unclear to me when it has been printed.
I also did not find anything on deck 02.
I was very glad to find this deck and the copyright B · P · GRIMAUD · that was quite "new" for me.

On different threads on ATF, I read about a 1930 version of Marteaus deck (with a Lys instead of a tulip on the 4 de Denier)
I would really like to know how do the original 1930 decks look and feel like.
I am aware of the Dusserre reproduction, but I really mean the original.
I am mostly interested to know what kind of cardstock this deck has compared to the deck 01.

As it is technically not possible to attach more than 5 scans in one post I had to split and post several answer to this thread.
One for each deck.
I hope you enjoy it.

Best regards

Added on the 25 Juni 2006:
Thanks to Kenji, informations and scans of the 1930 deck are now available on page 8 of this thread :)
And not only this: also scans from the Grimaud-Arnoult 1748 :)

Deck 00a

DECK 00a / (scans: GrimaudTdM00a)
From Marteaus Book "Le Tarot de Marseille"
Printed in Paris in Mai 1949
Exemplaire No 000883
Copyright: · B · P · GRIMAUD · PARIS ·
Copyright on major Arcane (except XVI La maison dieu, XVII La lune & XVIII Le soleil),
on all honours, the pips have no copyright.

Comments:
The pictures of the cards in this book are thin card plates (with a very thin paper) that are glued on the pages of the book.
The thin card plates have a light beige color, so the pictures look almost like the deck 01 (but the background color from 01 is darker)
The copyright of the book says:
DÉPOT LÉGAL, 2me TRIMESTRE 1949 - No 29. COPYRIGHT BY
« ARTS ET MÉTIERS GRAPHIQUES, PARIS » PRINTED IN FRANCE
It is a very beautiful copy of this book with exactly the same pictures as deck 01.
The fact that the pictures has been separately printed and glued in the book makes this copy very special.

Deck 00b

DECK 00b / (scans: GrimaudTdM00b)
From Marteaus Book "Le Tarot de Marseille"
Printed in Neuchâtel (Swiss) 15 Juli 1977
Copyright: · B · P · GRIMAUD · PARIS ·
Copyright on major Arcane (except XVI La maison dieu, XVII La lune & XVIII Le soleil),
on all honours, the pips have no copyright

Comments:
The pictures are exactly the same as in 00a but directly printed on the pages.
So the background color of the pictures is the color of the paper used in this book: broken white.
As a matter of course there is no finish, so the color are not glossy but quite deep and rich (probably because of the thick paper)
It is also a very beautiful copy of this book.

The copyright of the book says:
DÉPOT LÉGAL, 2me TRIMESTRE 1949 - No 29. COPYRIGHT 1977 BY
« ARTS ET MÉTIERS GRAPHIQUES, PARIS » IMPRIMÉ EN SUISSE

Deck 01

DECK 01 / (scans: GrimaudTdM01)
Copyright: · B · P · GRIMAUD · PARIS ·
Copyright on major Arcane (except XVI La maison dieu, XVII La lune & XVIII Le soleil),
on all honours, the pips have no copyright
French titles
Very thick cardstock
Background color: beige
(Came without box)
Cards: 62 mm x 119 mm
Deck thickness: 37 mm

Comments:
This is the most beautiful Marteau deck I have (I am lucky to even have found two copy of this deck!).
I love it first because of the colors.
The beige background gives the pictures a very smooth atmosphere and it does not have the "in your face" contrast of the pictures with the white background.
Also the flesh color looks to me more flesh and not pale-yellow-creamy like the newer versions.
I appreciate a lot the finish that is not glossy and does not feel like plastic, it is mat and feels a little bit like wax.
The thickness of the cards gave them substance.
The cards are smaller than usual.
First it also seems as if the pictures are smaller too, but there are not.
The frame is a little bit smaller and so you see a little bit less from the picture than on the other decks.
Finally I prefer the pattern cardback.

Deck 02

DECK 02 / (scans: GrimaudTdM02)
Copyright: B · P · GRIMAUD ·
Copyright on major Arcane (except XVI La maison dieu, XVII La lune & XVIII Le soleil),
on all honours, the pips have no copyright
French titles
Very thick cardstock
Background color: off white
Red box with L'AMOUREUX on one side
(Strangely the copyright on the picture of the box is: © B P. GRIMAUD 1963)
REF. G 103
Cards: 64,5 mm x 123 mm
Deck thickness: 40 mm !!!

Comments:
I like this deck very much too.
Due to the thickness of the cardstock, they also have much "substance"and it feels more like paper/carton though the finish and the lamination are glossy.
The pictures and color do not differ from newer decks (except maybe for the blue color which is not too dark) but they are clearer and deeper than on all other decks.
I find the particular cardback with the frame also very nice.
I also appreciate that many cards of this deck do not have a copyright :)
As I said before I am intrigued to know when this deck has been printed.

Later added:
In the meantime I got a second copy of this deck. This time it came with a thick orange booklet with L'Amoureux on the front.
The copyright on the booklet says J.-M. Simon 1969

Deck 03

DECK 03 / (scans: GrimaudTdM03)
Copyright: © B P. GRIMAUD 1963
All cards have a copyright
English titles
Very thick cardstock (same cardstock as 02)
Background color: off white
Red box with L'AMOUREUX on one side
REF. G 103
Cards: 64,5 mm x 123 mm
Deck thickness: 40 mm (without the 2 advertising cards)

Comments:
This deck came with two advertising cards with english text.
A blue stamped text is added on one card telling the deck is distributed by
U.S. GAMES SYSTEMS, inc.
This deck has quite exactly the same cardstock as deck 02.
To me is a positive fact that the titles are english only and this way the pictures have not been changed (see remarks on deck 04).

Deck 04

DECK 04 / (scans: GrimaudTdM04)
Copyright: © . GRIMAUD 1963
All cards have a copyright
French and english titles
Background color: white
Normal cardstock
Red box with L'AMOUREUX on one side
REF. G 103
Cards: 64,5 mm x 122 mm
Deck thickness: 26 mm

Comments:
In order to get enough place on the cards for the bilingual titles, the pictures have saddly been changed! For example LA JUSTICE doesnt stay anymore on a ground, the lion in LA FORCE looses his leg, LE PENDU is smaller and thiner, the sword of LE DIABLE has been shorten, the twins in LE SOLEIL are much nearer to the sun, LE MONDE and her guirlande are smaller, but the other figure did not change ...
I find also the cardback a little bit funny with the pattern that come from LE SOLEIL and 4 D'ÉPÉE. I could not find out where does the funny top of the flower come from (maybe from 3 DE DENIERS)
All in all, this is not my prefered deck ;)

Background color: white
Normal cardstock and lamination
Violet box with LE MONDE on one side and LE MAT on the other side
Réf. G 403

Comments:
As you can see on the scan, the usual mark with "1748 GRIMAUD 1930" on the "Deux de Deniers" is not there.
The cardback is used for advertising
The deck comes with two advertising cards, one from Grimaud and one from Reader's Digest.
Except for these two details, this is the same deck as 05

Deck 07

DECK 07 (mini) / (scans: GrimaudTdM07)
Copyright: B · P · GRIMAUD PARIS 1981
Copyright on major Arcane (except XVI La maison dieu, XVII La lune & XVIII Le soleil),

Cards: 40 mm x 74 mm

Comments:
I have another copy of the mini with the same copyright on the cards and with LE BATELEUR on one side of the box only.
But the blue color used on every card is very dark.

I hope this is useful for someone.

Best regards
