"Truth"

Trogon

I have often expressed the opinion that there is a huge difference between "salvation" (usually as this relates to the Christian religions) and "enlightenment" - and that these two pursuits are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Although, I still feel that most mainstream religions do not want you to be enlightened - they want you following their teachings, their dogma, not haring off finding out any truths for yourself.

However, I just ran across an older page of one of my most favorite on-line comics which makes a powerful statement;

I'm frequently amazed at the places one will run across interesting, thought provoking, even profound, statements regarding such things as spirituality or enlightenment.

Salvation and enlightenment have never seemed even remotely similar to me, certainly not the way that salvation was taught to me when I was younger. Nirvana and Heaven perhaps but where enlightenment is an internal process which can be achieved in this life by the individual, salvation is offered as an external reward after judgement and after life.

Agreed, truth is definitely in the eye of the beholder. The film Rashomon highlights this quite well.

Hmmm ... yeah, I probably could've worded it better. My intent wasn't that salvation and enlightenment were similar - just that they were not necessarily mutually exclusive. In other words one can be "saved" but still seek internal enlightenment as well. Sorry for the confusion. :D

At first I was thinking I didn't know what this film was ... till I searched Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashomon_(film)). I have seen "Rashomon" but had forgotten the title. It is an excellent film about perceptions and "honor"... among other things. I think I may have to rent it again though, I haven't seen it for many years.

HOLMES

ah yes

trogon i don't know if you saw the movie white buffalo from 1977 involving a fictional meeting between bill hitchock and crazy horse as portrayed by charlies bronson and will sampson.

I couldn't find an exact quote but i did find the whole movie on you tube so i fastforward the you tube video to the part where i wanted.

now at the time crazy horse was calling himself worm due to circumstances in his life, and hitchock was hiding his own name as well. they both knew they were not who they said they were and could see each had a high quality to them.
hitchock had by this time in the movie helped out worm(crazy horse) and the worm(crazy horse) had responded in kind.

it is at this time they had this conversation in the movie

"“the great spirit gave us these hills, as a home
You say why do we not become civilized, we do not want your civilization “ worm

You spoken “red truth “ hitchock

"Tell me then white truth long hair" worm

In the first place the great spirit did not give you these hills, you took this land by force, you took it from Cheyenne, the Shawnee, the nanjeo, you took it with lance and tomahawk and now the white man makes war on you , what is the difference “ hitchock

The whites has no honor,, the white man wants death comes out of season," worm

“that’s a thing called progress” hitchock

“that’s a thing called greed, tell me this,, am I evil because my skin is red, is it a wicked thing that I was born when my father was born,, is it a bad thing that I will die for my people “worm

“that is still red truth and not real truth"hitchock

“tell me this true truth then “worm

The white hair companion speaks about “rooster extinct”

“worm, when sittting bull was a boy the Sioux could throw 10,000 warriors into battle, today it is the white man turn, those you have seen in these hills and on the plains are like an handful of beans, they are many.
They are more then blades of the spring grass and more then the buffalow that smothered the earth with their great herds. There is no way to stand against the white man their weapons are powerful , they have the power, you will bend to the long knives or be broken. You will live as they say or die on their bayonets. hitchock

The white hair companion says”that is putting it to him captain”

Worm “ if such is the true truth then I will sing my death song “

“no I will not have your death” hitchock

“why not , you are white “ worm

“first I am your brother, and your friend “ hitchock

“long hair between us there shall be no war” worm

And the white hair man sitting next to them says “bull shit”
_________

each man was tied to their times, to their history,, at the end of the movie their true indentities are revealed and though crazy horse calls hitchock his friend he says the next time they meet crazy horse will see ony a lwhite man and hitchock should see only a red man. this is because of hitchock past where he killed whistler the peacemaker to which the character of this version of hitchock says it was a differnt time,, he was young and headstrong but crazy horse won't be able to forget that.

at the end of this movie on the history channel there is a discussion if they could of met back then during this time period and the guy says it is impossible but i think it was possible not that it actually happened.

but the main thing as it relates to the truth is a kind of variation on the old saying "to the winner goes the spoils" and that is the victor gets to write the history. so he could change the circumstances of the battle to make his vicotry seem even more better or his loss even more bitter.

to me this hasn't been more real to me then the fictional discussion that happen in the movie and that probaly has a lot to do with the actors as well as i went through a charlies bronson phrase.

for every situation there is differnt points of view points and truths based on that view point, and sometimes no matter how hard we try we can't get past the situations that are determining the circumatances of the present.

an example of that is at the end of the movie in the case of the death of whistler the peacemaker hitchock says to crazy horse " it cant' be undone" which means hitchock has to live with what he has done.

the thing about truth is sooner or later there will be an absolute truth that holds to be true like what direct the sun sets in, that there are oceans in the world, and some hard truths that can be surpising like water can weaken rock though rock is strong to make a cracks in it and break it.

and so truth may be in the eye of the beholder but absolute truth whatever that may be is in the eye of all (i guess it would be differnt for those who are blind).

PAMUYA

One of my favorite sayings about truth:

Truth is only as real as our delusion allows.

Richard

The conventional Christian perspective distorts enlightenment, calls it salvation, and prescribes how to obtain it, objectifying what must necessarily be a subjective spiritual process. It is this objectification and externalization of an inner process which characterizes mainstream religion. True spirituality just doesn't sell, and Christianity must promote a product that people understand and buy in order for the churches to survive. It has progressed to the point where the concept of salvation is almost never even remotely associated with enlightenment. Sometimes a Christian clergyman will become enlightened, but they must normally keep quiet about it or there will be the devil to pay. })
