White light

Milfoil

Rather than divert another thread and at the suggestion of HOLMES, I've opened up a new thread to discuss the concept of 'white light' in the spiritual sense. For background:

Milfoil said:
And on a personal level - white light bubbles - what happens when you turn a light on at night - yes, it attracts all kinds of flies and insects. Have you needed a white light bubble before now? Do you need to be brighter and whiter than everyone else or will it just shine a spotlight on stuff you would prefer to remain hidden.

HOLMES said:
by the same token, if you use that example that it would be better to be surrounded by darkness ? .
the thing is,, even if you were in the dark with the window open sooner or later the a mosquito will find you and bite you,, or a no seeum can come through the screen.

perhaps a person might of needed a white light bubble before now and just didn't know it, like when someone first meets the tarot for the first time and realize that it was something they need to study somewhere on theri soul.
it is better to be brighter and whiter then how we used to be, that is how i think of it as opposed to be better then anyone else.
I think of the person who is over worked and drained, a bubble of light/filling up the body with light can help the person relax and maintain an healthier aura then not.
yet as you say milfoil this is a personal level so we shall have to agree to disagree on this.

one thing about the bubble of light though is that it isnt' a shield of light that keeps all things out,, for such a visualization keeps all things in as well so eventually a aura will get stagnanted like a body of water being disconnted from its source.

that is why i resonated so well with filling up the body with light in Your Aura & Your Chakras: The Owner's Manual
, and seeing the bubble of light as raising the vibation as taught by orin and daben the guides for sanay roman in opening to channel.
it is much like sitting in power

http://www.freewebs.com/spiritvoices...g-in-the-power
at least based on what i have read about it.

To set the discussion of, first I would respond to HOLMES specifically:

HOLMES said:

But we have darkness and light, day and night as a normal and usual part of life. My point was that by changing that state, we change how things react to us and not always in a purely positive way. There are always consequences.

More generally I would ask the following questions:

a) Where does the concept of filling oneself or surrounding oneself with white light come from? What are it's origins? Many people accept these things having read them somewhere but have no idea where the concept originates.

b) What is this white light - where does it come from?

c) How does this visualisation teach or bring change?

DownwardSpiral

I'll bite : )

a) I have no idea where this concept came from.

b) My understanding is that this white light comes from the universe/higher power. Simply what it is white light...a pure source of energy.

c) I'm not sure how to answer this so can only say......people imagine this light coming from above.....traveling through their body and into the ground and surrounding them with a "bubble" of protection.

I don't use a white light.......it's hard enough for me to keep asking for protection let alone having to visualise all this.

I have also heard that protecting yourself with white light is like sending out a "beacon" to the spiritual world. But then really when you think about it...why wouldn't anything "spiritually" related that you do send out a beacon?

In my sons books on ghost hauntings it mentions two groups of people most likely to encounter spirit/ghosts. I can't remember the first group but the second was very religious people and I can't imagine them protecting themselves with bubbles of white light.

HOLMES

well firstly.

"And on a personal level - white light bubbles - what happens when you turn a light on at night - yes, it attracts all kinds of flies and insects."

you also can find your way in the dark and see better.
it makes you feel more safer , or at ease more if you can see where you are going.
(though obivously a blind person wouldn't feel the same way eheh.
as ray charles characer said in the movie ray when a person said to him to stop cooking in the dark.. "why do i need to turn on the light for ).
it can keep away animals if you got a fire going as well
(except for the horror movies where the werewolf attacks even though there is a big fire in the wolfman remake)
pretty well turning on a light when you are in darkness allows you if you see, to do the things easier in the dark then feeling around.

Don't worry about 'biting', this wasn't a thread to elicit a certain response but merely a discussion.

Don't worry about not knowing, rarely do any of the 'spiritual' books tell us the origins because the authors often don't know either.

The concept, from what I can gather, arose out of early Spiritualism in the 1840s. Influenced by, amongst many other things, Goethe's famous writings on light (Theory or Colours)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_Colours

It is easy to see how contemporary thinking about the nature of things such a light were influencing the new Spiritualists. He is quoted in their literature and since it was understood that white light was the sum of all colours of light, naturally shines from heaven above which is where the Abrahamic (monotheistic) religions such as Christianity which was the overwhelmingly influential religion in the West at that time consider God to be housed, combined with long standing belief in halos around those who are closer to God, all came together to form the white light theory. Of course, it has grown and evolved over the years so that in the 20th C visualising white light became popular.

From my own understanding which, I admit, is not terribly wide, this visualisation misses the point. The emination of a halo or brightening of the energy around a person is not down to any amount of visualisation but is a pure and true emination of of the higher vibrational frequency. It comes from purity of soul not from visualisation.

Although I can see some value in positive thought and visualising positive things, the way that white light is touted today bears little resemblence to the original ideas.

That is exactly why there is a foundational problem with the visualisation of white light in general. It gives a false sense of security, which when relied upon as a complete panacea, will ultimately fail. So when someone has a fear or a worry, (the darkness) instead of facing that fear, they trust in a perception of white light. All it does is make them feel better for a short while but doing little to address the problem. Far better to give someone the tools by which to feel secure in the dark, work past the fear and become more confident. As a healer, wouldn't you say that the true aim of all healing is to determine the problem then set about giving the person the tools by which to empower them to healing. The white light visualisation may make someone feel better, psychologically, for a short while but how does it address what their real problem is? Added to that the misconception of what white light was original supposed to mean (visual proof of a person's higher spiritual vibration or halo), visualising can only ever be a meditative practice to

Fire is a completely different concept, far from being a visualisation, it is real, hot, burns, warms, defends, cooks, destroys and transforms. It is a valid and valuable tool which teaches us as well as working with us. It is not a mere figment of our imagination, it is real! When we call upon fire to help us in this world or the others, there is a real spirit preset.

Turning on a light may allow us to see but it dulls the other senses. Light in the dark, of course, has it's uses but sometimes, especially when we are searching for answers or healing (which is what most people who read about white light are doing) we need to be aware of all our senses and how they can help us to grow confident when faced with dark situations.

To me, from experience, white light visualisations are like a sticking plaster. They have their place but a sticking plaster won't cure cancer or even a broken finger.

HOLMES

i guess you expect me to answer that.

a) Where does the concept of filling oneself or surrounding oneself with white light come from? What are it's origins? Many people accept these things having read them somewhere but have no idea where the concept originates.

b) What is this white light - where does it come from?

c) How does this visualisation teach or bring change?

i already posted something about white light bubble in the other thread in response to the person saying they dont' know to much about the bubble of light.

a and b) obivously it comes from someone teachings for it to make it to books and it took off. I tried ot do a search for it but i have no idea as i looked through google so i stopped.
the 7 rays

was first taught by the

and it seems to have taken off in lot of writings in the 80s, 90s so it becomes commonplace in teachings on channelling.

where i got it from was
ask your angels. 1992

opening to channelwhich was made in 1986, spiritual growth, soul love, it is one of their major teachings

there is no date on that album but it was made in the 96ish if memory serves,, that teaching is at least since 2000.

ok i pulled out a lot of books to see where it may be.
this book i dont' have anymore
light in Your Aura & Your Chakras: The Owner's Manual has it in there, 1998
The Healing Energy of Your Hands 1995 .

as i went through my books it occured to me that it could of possibly came from healing teachings as well.
hands of light 1988 24 years ago, talked about working with the chakras and filling up one body with channeled guides and light to affect healing. a painted picture in the book shows her healing with light coming down her crown center into her body with angelic hands over hers.

way of the mystic 1995 page 86
"for sending healoing to others , or ourselves, my guidance has alwasy taught me to envsiion people in a white light energy rather then to focus on speicific colours , white contains all the colors of the rainbow, and if we send this pure white to others, then the body will hannel it to whatever area needs healing "

you are psychic 2006 (only five years)
she talks about filling the body with golden light energy in the cosmic energy section, she started her training in 1994 at the berklee psychic institute, and studied with faith healers and psychic surgeons in philpines.

channelling, use your psychic powers to contact your spirit guides.
for healing she ask that you ask the healing energy to flow through you.

(to me healing energy is white light, and can take on other forms of light as well as needed).

divine guidance how to have a dialouge iwth god and your guardian angels, good old doreen virtue eheh.
page 197, breathing in the light through your body and out,, breathing in clears the body.

edited to add
page 96 of the jesus path, 7 steps to a cosmic awakeningg, reconnecting your inner spirit during changing times.
the author has you fill your body with peace, which she calls green

page 101 of how to hear the voice of god
the piller of light mediation,, in it you fill up your body iwth light.

____

that is from all my books i have on it, and as i read through them i had a theory.
1. barbara ann brennen books hands of light being published in 1986 had a big influence especially as students graduate from her healing school over the years.
2. opening to channel in 1986 came out and that teaching was passed down in her subsquent books, tape then cd and now mp3 downloads.
and as i thought about healing books i have read, filling up one body was prominte for spiritualing healing, like the book "your healing hands " "your hands can heal you:
passed that on to those who were interested in healing.

so pretty well in my opnion filling up one body came from the channelling approach, and the healing approach..
and as you can see from the book so you want to be a medium ,, it is taking weight in mediumship teachings. (at least those who read her book ) .

brb with next post.

One of the reasons, I feel, that we don't find visualisations of white light in ethnographic literature and traditional 1st nation beliefs is that they had no access to early spiritualist concepts. Their own practices had never conceptualised this idea and the otherworld journeys or visions of the shamans and medicine people didn't show this white light visualisation either.

The other aspect of how the 'light' concept came into wider use in Western esoteric teachings is down to the Eastern influcence. Concepts such as chakras, kundalini etc have often been taken quite out of context with the highly specific cultural beliefs about dark and light, colours (which have natural associations to flowers, spices etc in those countries which were symbolic and spiritually significant - eg lotus), plants, deities, ghosts, the soul etc.

Thanks for that, Holmes--it's hard to track such ideas. Blavatsky seems the origin of quite a lot, eh?

I've tried to visualize myself in a bubble of white light for protection. I think that taking a moment to catch my breath and get centered when faced with disconcerting situations is what really works--and since the visualization takes a bit of time, it served that function. Now I just take a moment to get oriented and grounded.

Visualizing colored light was part of my reiki master attunement. I don't know how well I did it, but when the reiki master teacher came behind me to do whatever it is she did, my head filled with lavender mist, and everyone else had the same experience.

HOLMES

so

so besides my theory i talked about above,, i think it was a long term techique that existed long before the new age awakening working with white light.
i think surrounding oneself with light and love just naturally starts to fill up the body for some in their personal meditions.

b) the white light for me comes from the ultimate source. yet for some who resonate only with god or goddess it would be from that as well.
the ulatime source is the male embodiment and the female embodiment as one.. aka there is no male god, or female goddess but just the source of all life.
it is for that reason that i saw silver light as goddess light, and golden light as god energy.
the white light i envision is the pure bright white light you see in the hollywood movies under special effects, cocoon 2 comes to mind when the old man is healing his wife.

for me white light is energy (just no percieved as colour ) it is unconditional love,
when people say light and love, they are really saying the same thing just that the empashis on the aspect of love instead of healing or protection.
for me when people say the light when they are not dealing with healing properities of colours in trying to heal,, that the golden light for some is the same as white light.
when i hear about the divine 3 flames as taught in the old theosphy that i read about in books by elizabeth prophet they are to me talkinga bout the holy spirit , the divine light.

c) this visualization/mediation in the teachings as taught in today worlds,, does the following
1. it protects
2. it raises up one vibation
3. it cleanses one vibration (so it can be raised).
the benefits are long term like praticing mediation over time.

the thing to do is try it , see if you like it.
it is like asking something to try prayer,, to see if it works for them..

for me it works for me before I do tarot readings, healing, and spiritual stuff.
and to be honest i dont' sit there and do this every day,, (aka fill up my body ) nor do i do my chakras, or reiki myself.
i know that if i did this every day i would probaly change a lot in my life, of course that is my belief.
