The Psychometer/motor

Mycroft

A fascinating item which belongs to renowned planchette collector Brandon Hodge, curator of The Mysterious Planchette!. The Psychometer/motor enables you to demonstrate;

"Mind Moves Matter by means of the Etheric Vortex"

Well, that's what it says on the box anyway, and the instruction booklet promises;

"Physical Proof of The Human Spirit, Soul and Immortality"

which is always comforting to know. This wonderful device was sold by GAMAGES, a legendary shop which was a real life "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" by all accounts. However, there are no clues as to when this device was made or who manufactured it for Gamages.

Ever seen anything like this or know anything about it?

I've seen something like this before and got to play with it once. that 4-armed prop sits balanced on a pointed tip (2nd pic). with the one I played with, you place the base in your hand and through psychometry, you're supposed to be able to spin the prop. it didn't work too well for me... :/

I'm not exactly sure, beyond the fact that it seems to be linked with Psychometry, and causing the cross to spin by touching the base. I've asked Brandon for some details about the instructions in the accompanying booklet, as I'm very curious as to where the Etheric Vortex comes into play.

Interesting! I've never encountered a device like this before, so I wonder if there were more modern versions of this made? This one appears to be c1880-1910 by the look of the box and the fact that it has "By Royal Letters Patent" on it, but it could be more recent.

Mycroft, have you tried your Psychometer, or are you in a research/preparation mode?

It's not mine, as I mentioned in the first post it belongs to Brandon Hodge who has an extensive collection of early spiritualist and spirit communication devices. This one has proved very difficult to date and find any evidence for a manufacturer, so we thought a post on AT might yield some more information about it from the helpful and knowledgeable folks here.

I wonder if you could submit these photos for a Peeking thru the Keyhole thread. Perhaps some details can be picked up about the Psychometer that way?

unfortunately, I can't recall when/where I came into contact with the one I got to play with. I cant even recall with clarity what the top spinning prop looked like exactly. this one in the picture is quite a pretty piece.

Mycroft, I hope I can ask my question in your thread. If not, I'm happy to come back and delete it. I'll even listen to that Top Gear performance as penance for mucking about your thread.

But my question: Does anyone know if there's a homemade, easy to make version of a Psychometer?
