LEAST favorite deck to shuffle...ever

greatdane

So we're just talking tactile here, not how we love other aspects of a deck.

I Love the Vampire Tarot by Place, but LEAST favorite deck to shuffle ever. First, the size of the original (thankfully a wonderful ATer gifted me one that he had trimmed :) AND cornered and it's MUCH better and easier to shuffle now), but then there is that weird texture. I do an over/under, I don't riffle shuffle and it's not a pleasure to shuffle like some are. LOVE the deck, it's just not a fun shuffler. And it wasn't just how LARGE the cards were, it's how thick it is, of course, still is, I call it the Chunky Monkey deck. I have fairly long fingers and it's still a challenge to shuffle.

Next would be the second edition Bohemian Gothic. Something about the size PLUS the stock just made it really difficult, although I really liked the deck. I traded it and another deck for the first edition Bohemian Gothic and LOVE how that one and the third edition shuffle.

So which is your LEAST favorite deck EVER to shuffle? Feel free to name decks that tie or runners up too!

:) Before I even consider pulling out my Nostradamus I feel I need workout extra hard for about a month. ;)

lol G.O.T.H.!

That gave me my laugh of the day :). Some decks, as much as we may love them, are just not "shufflers." I enjoy the tactile part of shuffling and some are a pleasure and some, not so much. Thankfully, most of mine I love to shuffle, the Vampire Tarot is just harder. The Gilded Reverie took me months to break it in and then I passed it along anyway. It's that thick, strange, glossy, but sticky, and almost oily feeling. WHAT do they make them out of or coat some of these decks with?

I have a bunch. Just off the top of my head:

- the Daniloff- squared corners, and I hate to corner round them in case I hate it, because I spent so much

- Wicca Moon- squared corners AND big

- Daughters of the Moon- I know, we're supposed to swish round decks around on a table. I don't like swishing. I want to shuffle!

- the Deviant Moon (the original version)- just a wee bit too long for me to shuffle comfortably. The new borderless version is much more slippery, so I don't find it as hard to shuffle.

- Bohemian Gothic, 2nd edition- cards are too thick or something. They just don't shuffle nicely. My Silver is much better.

- Anna K, self-pub.- cardstock is WAY too thick to shuffle comfortably in any way, shape or form...but I love the images and the size enough to put up with it!

Oh gosh, and how could I forget the Mary-El??? I think it's the worst of the bunch. It's the only deck I've encountered that, to me, cannot be shuffled at all. Super glossy and the cards stick together. It's bananas!

ah swedishfish612

I thought I was the only other person who had problems shuffling the second ed Boho Gothic! Between the size of the cards and the thickness, just not fun, although I did like the "crunchy" texture of the cards. I see you mentioned the Anna. K, I have two of the second ed and while it is a THICK deck, because the cards aren't that big, I don't have a problem, but I can see how some could.

Round decks! I own the Circle of Life deck, and shuffling it has never been more of a chore.

The lovely La Corte dei Tarocchi. It's too thick.
And I'll second the Mary-el full deck for the same reasons swedishfish gave.

The Mary-el cardstock is atrocious. The cards stick together. It's the size of a brick. It's a pricier deck (by my standards at least), and the cards are so thick and glossy looking that you get fooled into expecting it be of a higher quality. Mine came peeling on some of the edges so I don't even want to shuffle/mess with it (and to top it off, their customer service never responded to me after multiple tries). Such a rip-off. I doubt I'll ever buy another Schiffer deck ever again! It was that bad!!

Aeric....

never owned a round deck, isn't it like shuffling coasters?
