romantic intentions : 9 of sword and death

my friends question:
what are his romantic intentions if any?
first two cards are 9 of swords and death.

back-ground : love/hate "friendship" which has been stuck in "hate phase" for sometime now.

this one is a hard one for me.

9 of swords : guilt from within, almost torture like.
death : new beginning, change.

so can I say that he feels depressed ( or she makes him feel depressed )to the point of wanting to cut her out completely and moving on?
or he is done crying over split milk and instead of beating himself up, he wants to change this hate/love friendship to something else " dare i say a romantic one"

My first thought when I saw this was eeeeeeeek! To me this has a stalker vibe rather than anything romantic, personally if this came up Id advise the querant to run a mile. The hideous angst of the Nine, all those swords with the absolute ending/intense feelings of Death, run away!

He has had a lot of regret/turmoil/worry about how things have been between them previously and he wants things to change dramatically, one way or the other.

yes, the "one way or the other" is the part i'm having trouble with.
which way? death is not giving me that information.
the two other cards are in regards to advice and won't really give me an answer about his intentions or lack there of.

Definitely. If it were me, I would do a reading for her on where it's headed/what he wants to happen regarding their relationship.

I would say that they're obsessive, so they'll want to know everything they can possibly find out about the other. Meaning, they'll go to very scary depths to find out what they want.

Just to add, I'm likely totally off base, but whatever the other finds out could either be used as a weapon or would be enough for them feel it necessary to end things.

I might be overthinking these two together.

They want to end (Death - transformation) their pain of feeling alone and isolated (9 of Swords). That's what they intend to do ... to connect with another as they believe it will rid them of their negativity.

His intention in my opinion would be to cause emotional havoc 9.o.s before completely ending it between them (death). Just areally seems like he needs her to suffer before he will be totally through with her.
