Original Mythic Tarot

Thoughtful

A friend of mine is gifting me this deck as she did with the 1JJ Swiss. As it's OOP l was a bit reluctant to accept but she has another copy. It will be the purple one with hardback book and cloth. So l have been trying to find out as much as possible, looking at scans and reading a rather long 38 page thread http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=94933&highlight=original+mythicthread! my poor eyes :bugeyed:
l found the thread totally engrossing and although it was originally to inform about the upcoming New Mythic, most of the posts were about the very deep love people have for the original, how it was their first deck.
Later in the thread which started in 2008, the New mythic became available and there were discussions about the differences, the majority not very favourable, especially as Tricia the original artist had been rather ripped off by her images being redrawn by another artist.
Having looked around ebay and amazon there are an awful lot of the New Mythic being passed on. Maybe it was not the success the publishers had hoped and who knows we could have a nice reprint of the original and a happy outcome for Tricia.
Having seen the scans and read as much as l could in anticipation of receiving this deck, l'm really looking forward to it and l feel it could be another little treasure like my Roots of Asia. My friend has an uncanny knack when it comes to tarot gifts for me  bless her.
So are you still in love with and reading with your original or do you prefer the New Mythic now. Having looked at the scans of the New l much prefer the one winging its way to me any day now.

according to the publisher, there were better than a million copies sold, it isn't rare, enjoy!
If you like the deck look for the workbook and companion book if they didn't come with.

I was never inclined to get the new version, one is enough of any deck.

They do seem to be rare here and those for sale are commanding very high prices. l am being sent the companion book so looking forward to reading that, yes l may just also get the workbook plenty of those on ebay/amazon.
l am glad my friend did get more than one else l would not have the pleasure of it now

At one point a few years ago I decided I was being unfair to the New Mythic and decided to give it a chance. I bought the new set and worked my way (as I have several times in the past) through the book, with the cards at hand.

As a result, my opinions about the quality of the new deck are even lower than they were before. This is truly a train wreck of a deck. The artist of the new deck is clearly highly talented. I have no knowledge of the circumstances behind the new deck's creation, but I can only surmise that it was a rocky road. Some of the new cards are well and carefully illustrated, others look like Saturday morning cartoons. Perhaps the artist thought he would be paid one amount, and, realizing it would be much less, simply rushed through the remaining cards to get the project over with.

The history of the arts is replete with ideas that looked good on paper and bombed in real life. Whoever it was who made the decision to have the artist of the new deck replicate Tricia Newell's compositions turned out to have made a classically bad decision. I really do hope that the publisher changes course and reinstates the original artwork on this deck. Anyone here remember the "New Coke" debacle? The New Mythic is the New Coke of the tarot world.

I don't recall anyone ever saying they prefered the new one. A lot of people have a fondness for the Original Mythic, it being their first deck etc, but then a lot of decks out there must be people's first deck.

I never really connected with it as I was out of tarot when it was published and then when I came back into the fold again there were other ones that caught my attention.

It's odd but literally as soon as it went OOP, it started being listed for high prices. It was quite literally overnight, although if you keep your eyes open, you might snag one at a reasonable price.

I genuinely don't see anyone with a fondness for the new one. Funnily enough, I saw a snap on instagram the other day and I thought "oooh, that's an interesting image" and it was from the New Mythic. Can't remrmber what it was, but I have enough decks and I know the New Mythic is very cartoony so I wasn't that tempted.

LOL! yes.
Having looked at scans of the New Mythic it just seems to be a glossy flat nothing. Colourful yes but it does not appear to have the heart and soul of the original. l can't wait to receive the original deck and study it, the images look so much more appealing and readable than the New.
Lets hope the publisher decides to reprint and as someone (l think Gregory) said in the thread "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

Yes me too LF it was around, but so many Tarots to look at and buy that it wasn't that high on my list of must haves at the time. Now many Tarots later l am being given it so hopefully l can enjoy it for what it says to me now.

The Mythic Tarot Study Group is complete (all 78 cards are posted about) and has some advanced studies posted too. The Mythic was my first deck and I was determined to see to it that the deck got an Individual Study Group. And now it has one. :)

I call the New Mythic "The Abomination." I refused to buy a copy of it, but my Tarot Crack Dealer and Enabler gave me hers. So I now have one in my collection, but will never use it. As I've said before, Caselli has done original Greek Mythology art, so I can only guess as to why he accepted a job redoing another artists' work....

I've been reacquainted with the Mythic over the last week or two as a co-worker keeps going to a free tarot reading site that uses a 6 card spread using the Mythic Majors and asking question after question about the same person and then asking me what the cards mean. (I haven't paid enough attention to the interpretations given to see if they're the same regardless of the position or from reading to reading.) I haven't used the Mythic for a reading in a number of years, so it was good to get reacquainted with an old friend. And now this thread. Maybe that's the universe's way of telling me I need to get my Mythic out again. :)

The original Mythic was one of the first decks I bought upon my return to tarot in 2011 (right after that "other Abomination," the Tarot of Meditation). Before that, it was solely the Thoth for a couple of decades. I never did warm up to the Mythic, though, and shortly after I bought the Radiant RWS (my first one of those since 1972) so I was set with two of the three archetypal deck types (TdM came much later, as did my side-trip into Lenormand).
