Joie de Vivre deck

Esk

Look closely. Her good side is on the left ... if you split her facial features down the middle, you will see anger expressed on her right side, and pure joy on the left with her hair free and flowing. There are always 2 sides to the Queen of Swords, but many people misjudge and make the mistake of seeing only one side of her personality. This is a great QOS card. That you describe her as a bad witch is how most people seem to see the QOS, but they're not seeing her at all.

I've seen she has two sides. But she still looks scary for me, maybe a little schizophrenic ;). I understand why people like this card and its complexity, but this queen makes me uncomfortable. My first deck is the shadowscapes and I think I'm too used to its beautiful queen of swords.

I was also a little puzzled by the king of cups. Not because he's wearing a dress but because he's lost in it, like if he's all about emotions and energies and doesn't even need a body.

Joie de vivre arrived today and it has surpassed all of my expectations. I should have known I'd love it this much, considering how much I've enjoyed the Paulina. I really wish I'd picked it up earlier!

I can't look at these cards enough. The artwork is pure fantasy -- lovely pastel colors and so many different creatures. There's so much LIFE in these cards and this deck is aptly named.

My favorites:

King of Wands - I love the mauve coloring and the expressions on the faces of both the lion and the rider. A little mischievous and defiant but in a playful way. This is the kind of teasing friend that has the ability to make you giggle, to laugh at yourself.

Queen of Swords - I love her! She looks so so sassy an I can just imagine her quick rapier wit. She's completely mastered the eyebrow arch of snark. Her sword is pointed down and I suspect she'd raise it only with discretion. I love the little heart hanging on the hilt, which makes me think about her ability to get right to the heart of the matter.

Nine of Coins - Such a wonderful buttery gold color in the background. Her falcon companion tells me that she's gained her luxury, comfort, and wealth through shrewdness. I love the pink pearls that the falcon carries and the LWB reference that they're a "gift for an old friend." It's a lovely reminder to share what you've earned with loved ones.

High Priestess - Love how she's emerging from the veil. Love her twin cats and the little details here, too, like the lotus flower crowning her head and the pomegranate. Cassidy really knows how to incorporate traditional Tarot symbolism in a fresh and new way.

I could go on and on. There isn't a card here that I don't like. This deck breathes new life into Tarot. I don't get an all sweetness and light here, despite the warm pastels and fanciful imagery. I suspect that, like the Paulina, this deck offers a balanced perspective.

It's a little bit like stepping into a beloved childhood book that is a beautifully illustrated classic. I also love the LWB to pieces. Her descriptions of the cards are like little stories. She manages to be playful without being trite -- just like her artwork.

I'm enchanted! :)

I just received this deck and wanted to revel in the joy with you guys! :D

Gorgeous; honestly I can see it becoming my very favorite. I'm especially fond of the rather dreamlike, transcendent Death card, the trippy World card, and the Four of Coins. Very dynamic.

I love the look of the Paulina but it just looks so so muddy online. I find these cards to be a brighter and more readable slice of Ms. Cassidy's work, and I do like the hotter color schemes more.

Long live the Joie de Vivre!!

feynrir,

So glad you're enjoying Joie de Vivre, too. I'm still enjoying this deck and I'm finding that it's a fantastic reading deck. I love her witty little descriptions of each card in the LWB. This deck works on so many levels.

Hi everybody!

I have ordered the Joie de Vivre tarot deck and I wanted to ask people who own it if the cards actually come with keywords? When I looked up the deck on Pinterest, some cards had keywords and some did not. So, I would really appreciate if someone could shed light on this :)

The Happy Squirrel

Anyone else find it a tad difficult to find clear distinctions between the aces of each suit, with the court cards, in particular the pages? They all depict one character holding one item of the suit.

Girl Archer, very late reply, but: there are no keywords on the actual cards. :)

I do like this deck a lot, but I never use it because of that horrible, slippery cardstock. :(
I hope USGames will reprint it using the gorgeous matte cardstock (Dreaming Way; practially perfect in every way, cardstock-wise!) that they've been using lately.

I'm surprised to see this thread brought up again. :)

I still love this deck. It's just so whimsical and beautiful. I had the Paulina at one time but I just never connected with it like I did with the Joie de Vivre. I'm glad to see so many other people are enjoying it, too.

I really don't mind the card stock at all. I like slippery, shiny decks.

The Joie de Vivre is just such a happy deck. The one thing I've always wondered though is why the King of Cups is wearing a dress.

Having grown up Catholic, I don't see a dress as much as I see a chasuble, like a lot of male saints wear. Which could go with the whole Grail King thing. I don't have the deck, so I don't know what the LWB says.

That said, all those hearts do fem it up real good.... :)

This thread is REALLY enabling.

Madrigal

I agree this thread is enabling. I'm almost sold but for the aforementioned shiny cardstock. A pet peeve and one that might be a deal breaker here.
