Expensive decks you just don't want

Darkmage

This is probably heresy, but I'm not a fan of the Knapp-Hall tarot. It's rare, expensive, OOP, and therefore a collector's item. Last time I was at Alpha they had a copy and they wanted $90 for it IIRC. That's a little rich for my taste and IMO isn't worth the cost.

If they reprinted it as a mass market deck I'd probably buy it. $20-30 would be reasonable. But $90 base? Used? No thanks.

They've got a republished version of Knapp-Hall here for $35:

To keep this on topic, my "don't need" deck would be the Alice.

Alice and Greenwood.

I just buy decks I like and never pay very much for them at all. I am unemployed on a fixed minimum income and splurge mainly on books and the odd deck now and then.

When it comes to rare decks, just pick them up early before they are rare ;-D

Dali tarot is one I don't get why it cost so much.
Then all them weirdly expensive Folchi decks.

And then on the other hand there are like true gems that cost £25 from Meneghello. Crazy world.

Oh I do have the Alice, and love it, but of course it is not looking well-worn yet. It is still rather new and the cardstock is amazing. But let me post a picture in a few years. Actually, no. I never wear decks out so it shows. (except a poor battered Zerner-Farber that is my handbag deck)

but yeah Dali... why? It looks like crap and cost a lot. and no one EVER talks about it.

Any deck that I spend $20 could be too expensive if it turns out that I don't like it. Any deck costing $200 it is not a waste of money if I am happy with it.

To keep to the topic: Alice...I have it, but don't need it. However I don't mind having it, it's beautiful! Once in a blue moon I look at the cards but for me it's not so good for reading and I don't use them.

I love it when these old threads pop back up.

That's one I did think about buying, at one point. It was for sale in the gift shop at the Dali museum in St. Petersburg, Florida (USA). And I love Dali and was all high on surrealism from visiting the museum. But it was $100 and ughhhh no. (It's $30 now! probably a different printing though.)

I ended up buying a cheap used copy of Rachel Pollack's book on the Dali Tarot, and it has very nice color plates, which was really all I needed. I realized I would never read with it as a tarot deck. Too off-kilter for me, with the trumps all mixed up. :p

I appreciate the work and creativity that goes into Baba Studio decks but so far none of them appeal to me enough to make me open my wallet. The VR and BG just seem a bit..dare I say...bland? I like the style of Alice but the subject matter doesn't interest me. Oh well!

willowy

Only two I can think of are Buckland romani tarot (the rabbit gets me too!)
and Tarot of Prague which is strange cause I love most of their other decks and it is beautiful but I just don't feel any pull to that one.
I love my Tyldwick, one of my faves I own but I also agree that some of the details which would help with interpreting the meanings of each card are obscured by the aged look of the cards, and it really did need a little guidebook explaining some of the symbols chosen.

I agree with you on this. The Baba decks are beautiful in their own way, I just know I wouldn't really use them. They don't appeal to me at all, and they are so pricey!

Zero Zip Nada

There are no TAROT decks CURRENTLY out there, as in made yet, I want (ok, I wouldn't mind the Aquarian POCKET, but I have the regular, so not like a deck new to me). It's a great feeling :).

With that said, not saying something won't come up in the future, but nothing I have seen in process or made, I currently want. I'm happy with what I have.
