Decks appealing to gay men

easyboy82

So...i did a search and I saw we had a number of threads in the forum along the years about "masculine decks" or about "gay themed decks". My thread is a bit different and heads in a different direction.
I'm not talking here about decks with a specific gay theme or with cards showing same sex lovers etc... but in general about decks which,be it for their artistic style (OR underlying , not-in-your-face, theme) are particularly appealing to gay males. I'm talking about that general , hard to define, taste that make possible that some cultural products ( singers, songs, films etc...) are particularly popular among gay men throughout the western world (camp? yes, but not only)

I'll make some examples:

* Though it's probably the only mass market/ mainstream "all gay" deck, I don't like the Gay Tarot (LS)
because:
- I find it too mundane
- it's too U.S-centric both in the situations depicted both in the way of showing a certain politicized/right activist side of the gay experience
- I find its aim for inclusiveness (age, skin colours, professions etc...) quite heavy handed and forced
_ I don't like the art...too soft (big mistake to assign a gay male deck to a female artist, in my humble opinion...)
So the Gay Tarot doesn't make the list for me :D

*Though not a tarot deck but an oracle, I find we now have the first *really* gay deck , i.e the Gods and Titans Oracle... omg, that deck is the cards equivalent of Spartacus (the tv series) or Vikings (again, the tv series) , of that kind of aesthetics I mean
Bulging muscles + male empowering + strong, colourful art... now, that's gay! :D

*coming back to tarot I'd dare to say : the Morgan Greer... there is something very masculine about it, but all those bold colours (...and may I add the 70's male pornstar look of some of the men in it ? :D :D ) make it look very gay friendly too to me ...a *top* deck LOL

So I'd like to hear which are the decks you think they have a "gay feel" , both from the other gay guys of the forum both from everyone else since I assume many of you read for gay friends or clients who may have expressed a particular liking for a deck

PS: I posted this in the tarot forum but I'd like to include oracle decks too

Well my thread was general, it's perfectly ok if someone taks about the gay vibes of the Hello Kitty Tarot :D

As it comes to me, personally, yes I like warriors and muscles (but also the Gummy Bears LOL )
so thanks for the advice, I was indeed investigating the Shaman in the past few days!

In my opening post I forgot to mention:

Tarot of the Witches (Fergus Hall) : colourful, a touch of camp , the association with Jane Seymour and a well known film...gay :D

I think I know where you're coming from.

Some thoughts from one who also ponders the same question as you... :)

I love the Navigators Tarot of the Mystic SEA. Something androgynous in this deck which can topple into maleness or femaleness, whichever you prefer. I really love this deck and find that there really is no other deck like it. It appeals to a gay sensibility even though the creator is not a gay man.

The improbably extravagant illuminati. Speaks for itself really. In my experience, many gay querents love this one and kind of hope for the Devil card to come up ;)

Then there's the - odd one this one - Tragically Comic Tarot of Mister Punch. Camp and nasty and fun. This is just my own personal choice as quite a campy deck which I personally find a little gay.

I'm assuming you know Chris Butler's Son Tarot. You may find that one speaks to you if the LoS one doesn't.

Interesting that someone mentions the Night Sun. Yes, I can see that...

There are so many others. I'll need to have a think.

How about the Art Nouveau Tarot by Matt Myers?

I *love* it...and guess what...I 'm very probably gonna give it to myself as a little present for Samhain :p

(edit to add) BTW: now, that's interesting how the same theme and artistic style (art nouveau) can have such different outcomes in the aforementioned deck and in the one by Antonella Castelli (which I own and quite like though I never really used it). The Myers' one is a thematic and gender neutral deck that definetely has that vibe which can appeal to gay taste (maybe I can call it "kitsch-iness"...but I mean it in the best sense in this case! , the Castelli's one feels straightforwardly feminine... and actually I never felt Mucha's art as feminine per se...it's soft and curvy and elegant but not feminine as I intend it...and it has the gay vibe, as all Liberty style art for that matter...while though Castelli imitates Mucha's style really really well, in her creations the same illustrations take a definetely feminine flavour.
