When I was in college, there were only about 5 people that knew how much I read, and how I paid for school. I didn't talk about it, and always steered the conversation away from the specifics of "my work" when it did come up.
It wasn't that I was ashamed, but more that I wanted to be taken seriously in college. I saw how friends that had "alternative" jobs to pay for school (more than one exotic dancer, and a tattoo artist) were treated, and didn't want that.
