Decanates and harmonics

Maggiemay

Hi...It's me...again ;)

Are decanates and harmonics valid enough to be used while studying a chart?

Eg : My ascendant is 7d. Pisces. I read that the first 10 degrees of pisces have a special ''tie'' to Neptune, whereas the next 10 degrees are linked to cancer ( the moon) and the last 10 to scorpio.

Any of you pay attention to this when studying a chart?

What about harmonics? I am mostly interested in the quintile.

Reason : I do not have many trines and sextiles in my chart. However I could see a few quintiles that look interesting.

To be honest... I don't feel the effect of those quintiles in my day to day life... And anyways, aren't quintiles an energy one has to work to bring out?

Very curious to hear what some of you might say,

Maggie :)

Dane Rudhyar's An Astrological Mandala talks about looking at the 5 points that come up within the 360. I can't remember if this was directly from his suggestion, or a note I made to myself, but I have

Well, this sounds really interesting but I am not sure I understand what to do exactly...

How would go about it? Do I start counting the 5 points from my sun position?

Thanks,

Maggie :)

Well, one of the things I'm playing with is to get the degree for a planet or point in the chart and then look up those 4 associated degrees and any symbolic correspondences.

Let's say you have Mercury at 29Ari29; you would round to Aries 30
318 30 102 174 246

You set up your "star" with the 30 at the single point and fill in around the other points.

You could play with the way different traditions assign elements to the points, etc. They even have patterns of how to draw your pentacle, so you could try following those, too!

I like using Marina Costelloe's assigned gemstones too!

Aries 30 (30) A pond, a duck and ducklings ~ rainforest jasper (rhyolite)
Cancer 12 (102) A Chinese woman nursing a baby with a message ~ Chinese writing stone (porphyry)
Virgo 24 (174) Mary and her white lamb ~ gypsum
Sagittarius 6 (246) A game of cricket ~ blue aventurine
Aquarius 18 (318) A man unmasked ~ tourmalinated quartz

Pretty wild, huh? Mercury is messages, childhood, learning, communication.
Mercury in Aries is associated with quick answers, mental competition

I'm not sure how much you really know. You seem to be throwing out issues like a scatter gun. Take one thing at a time and develop your knowledge of that. However first ensure that you are fully familiar with the basics.

For Harmonics, the classic text is that by John Addey. Dane Rudhyar, as mentioned above, is also well worth reading.

Decantes date from Egyptian times, and come down in Western tradition, through the Greek Faces. There are now a number of ways of ordering them and indeed using them. Again I tend not to use anything but the Faces, and even then, as per tradition, I don't place a lot of weight on them. Others may well do though.

So many questions, so little time!

So that Tarastrology book might be pretty tough, huh?

Ah hah!! I remember you from that thread...

Actually, it was silverwings94 that ordered the book and was supposed to give us some feedback.... ( Apparently the concept is interesting..but the book itself not so much)

I agree with the suggestion by Minderwiz, John Addy is almost a mandatory read for Harmonics. There are a number of 'harmonic' books by other authors, but I would advise you read him first. However in the end, it's up to you.
