Finding used decks, sigh.

Luna-Ocean

Hi

I have been reading all the post about used decks, i was going to buy a vintage ( 1968 Tarot production Albano on Ebay a few weeks ago, but changed my mind because the seller was asking for quite alot of money over £100, do you collector's really pay that much for these second hand OOP decks?

How does someone like me who has no idea about what i should be paying for these old decks, is it possible to find a decent priced vintage deck.

I have a suggestion, and this is for the collectors among you, use the Power of Aeclectic! An actual blue book may be impossible, but a sticky thread used as a directory of sorts with going prices and also a buyer beware section could help bring a little sanity to the prices. For example, if fifty members paid X for a used deck, one would know to keep looking instead of paying X+Y. It would be for subjective, internal use, of course, but it would help new members as well as old to have a resource like that, and would also warn people against stores that have bad practices. In time, if enough people say the phrase "but on Aeclectic people paid..." it may actually make a difference.

used, old, OOP

Just a note, STAR* - my own Tarot book sold for all of $10 USD for four years in print. Now that it is OOP, I do an Internet search every now and again and have found a copy of my $10 OOP book selling up to $500 a copy!

Also - so you know - I do not think anyone should pay more than $20 for my OOP book because they are being ripped off. Remember, too, that I get no royalty for the $500 sale of my book - so paying a highly overinflated price is only lining the pockets of the seller.

Thats a great idea closrapexa, it would serve as an expert price guide for searching for old vintage and OOP decks, it would also help the less experienced collectors like me, it would also give someone an idea on what to pay instead of paying extreme amounts of money.

Figuring how to price decks you are selling is difficult too! I'm trying to sell an OOP deck and I've no idea what it's worth and I don't want to ask an unreasonable amount but I also don't want to get too much less than I paid. I really wish prices were more transparent but i guess that benefits some people so I get why they don't want that kind of stuff up. But I don't care about making a profit. I'd rather just trade it, haha, but no bites so far.

Tarotbear, i actually bought your book ( It's all in the cards about 3yrs ago now i still use it as a reference for many of my readings, i guess my book is now worth more then what i originally paid for it so that is good to hear. ;-)

I'm not terribly keen on posting what I pay for things publicly, to be honest. Sometimes because I am well aware I have paid over the odds - either by stupidity or for some good reason or other; other times because a couple of people here have done me huge favours.... And ebay prices don't say a lot. Because you so often get weird sales (there is a Thoth up there for instance. No box so I contacted the seller - yes, she said happily, it has all 72 picture cards... On the other hand there was a deck I bought once for next to nothing (I can't remember what it was now !) which had accidentally got listed under jewellery and pendants... Now - would that price paid rate here as an indicator or not ?)

Hi Gregory

Can you disclose how much you have spent over the years since collecting Tarot decks, my eyes nearly poped out when i saw your listed decks, where do you find all the spare room for them all. ;-)

A friend of mine had bought one of those ( Hexerey Thoth decks a few years ago, would they be considered a good market price now if he decided to sell it.

I try to stick to a range of 3-5 times retail price. Most decks (or deck & book sets) fall between $15-30, so that makes my playground.

15 x 3 = $45; 15 x 5 = $75
30 x 3 = $90; 30 x 5 = $150

Those Hexerey Thoths are sought after but not that expensive. Someone here does want one....

My storage is in many threads here. But the images are out of date, so here you go.

Yes, I have spent a great deal - but over nearly 40 years, and mostly at the original price when the decks came out. Like - my Greenwood cost me £25, and all but one of my Folchi decks were about £10... So my total expenditure would not be anywhere near what it would cost to replace and isn't really relevant. However, it cost me a lot less than it would have cost me to smoke instead, and a GREAT deal less than playing golf.

ETA - indeed, my SO - now hugely amused, said OMG it would have cost you almost three times that to smoke like your sister does :D
