Stereotyping certain groups, such as the elderly, blacks, or homosexuals, especially as regards their stupidity and narrow-mindedness, is flagrantly offensive. Any reader who would try to humor me by using a Doreen Virtue deck would be in for an unpleasant surprise. What in hell does anyone know about the mentality of people raised in earlier decades unless they experienced it themselves? There are people of all ages and social class who are ignorant and inflexible, and some of them are even tarot readers.

I read sometimes for the over 70 crowd, and what I find more often a problem with some of them is their ability to see details clearly, so a deck like International Icon might suit both purposes. But I've also found this group loves and appreciates lovely artwork, with or without nudity.:D

My idea of Hell; being in an elderly home having someone less than half my age read to me with a gentle deck. Because I can't handle it.

Exactly.

What do you think they can't handle? These are people who may have lived through a world war and quite possibly did all sorts of mad and crazy things in the '60s..

I used to work with the elderly and yes, some of them are quite prudish and very naive where sex is concerned but equally, some are very worldly wise, despite their apparent frailty.

My advice is to use whichever deck you usually use when reading for strangers; the elderly are no different to anyone else and are often a lot wilder and more broad minded than they are given credit for.

Maybe the Housewives Tarot? A good reading deck and a little humor might help in creating a positive experience.

but as I start to see people for in-person readings again, it strikes me that many decks I use are simply not suitable for the very-sheltered senior citizens I deal with around here. Many are much older, very traditional, and religiously Jewish or Catholic, and I see that a lot of my decks have either lots of bare bosoms etc.

l think some have missed the point here, as the above quote shows you know who your clients are. Its not just that they are elderly (l am one!) and you feel they require a hand holding reading. Being able to cater for all beliefs, ages, religions and sensibilities is thoughtful. One deck may not offend a liberal minded person yet the same deck could seriously offend another. So l think its wise to consider getting a middle of the road deck that you and your clients would be comfortable with, such as those mentioned already.

I commend you for knowing your "group" of readers so well, Donnalee

I think it's great you wish to provide some choice for those you already know will not like certain types of decks. Let's face it, as readers we don't all like the same decks, why should anyone else? I understand you are not trying to stereotype your sitters, but know what they like and what would offend.

If someone leans toward Christian taste, there are decks out there with that imagery like the Connolly. If someone wishes a vintage-looking deck, I think the Pamela Colman Smith Commemorative makes a great impression. The Anna. K might be something some would appreciate and there is an older couple for the Lovers :). Just a suggestion.

For more choice, you might also Bing or Google whatever type deck you are looking for (Christian Tarot, for example) just to see what comes up.

Happy readings,

I gotta go with this. And I'm positively allergic to decks like Connolly and Hansen-Roberts.
