Trimmed Borders/Altered Decks Index

I think I'm going to trim my Wildwood soon, going to practice on my Lenormand set first (it was a bit cheaper, and is less likely to make me cry if I mess up one or two cards as I'm not as in love with the art, though I like it well enough).

I've got a craft knife (the really basic kind that's, like, a long blade that's scored every cm or so - I think you can snap the blade when it gets blunt so you've got a 'fresh' piece?? - in a plastic handle that the blade can be slid into/out of), a self-healing mat, a cork-backed steel ruler, a corner cutter thing, and a dew drop ink pad in Cottage Ivy for the edges - I think it's a bit brighter than would be ideal, but it'll be better than raw, white edges, I think - will test on the inside edge of the cut off borders, though!

One tip I saw somewhere for the corner cutter/stamp/punch thing is to put it on a flat surface, put the card inside, and then put a hardback book on the stampy part so you're pressing down on a large, flat surface, rather than digging the stampy part into the heel of your hand over and over. Haven't tried it yet, so unsure if I'd need to worry about the card slipping or anything, but it seems like a good idea.

There is a thread on cutting tools, here:

I've never had much luck with craft knives. I find them hard to control accurately. Sharp scissors or an inexpensive craft trimmer (see thread) might work better.

I saw the book-method for corner punching. I haven't needed it with these punches:

Thanks for the links! I don't really get on with too much scissors use, my hands tend to cramp up. Could probably do it a card at a time (over several days/weeks), I suppose, but I get on okay with craft knives, as long as they're sturdy and the thing I'm cutting is, too (e.g. they're not much use on fabric in my experience, or very thin paper, but for things like decent quality card, they're fine). That said, I did have a different knife which was much less reliable, it was a sort of "retractable pen" styled thing, with a very small, narrow blade (only about the size of a calligraphy pen nib, really!) and when I cut up a piece of card last week for Lenormand flashcards, it was pretty awful!

Thankfully I found my cheap, tacky, but also sturdy and sharp old craft knife in the bottom of my box of assorted stationery bits and pieces (paperclips, rubber bands etc) - and thankfully the blade was safely retracted!!

Mae, it should work fine - that is how I trim my cards, except I use a nail clippers to round the corners ;) the red pen-like object beside my cards is my trimming exacto blade.

Yay, those look great - I *love* the Wildwood without borders :D Thanks for the pics :) I trimmed my first Lenormand card earlier this evening and it came out nice, perhaps half a milimetre of border here and there, but nothing I'm going to allow myself to worry about (I definitely tend to fall into the 'perfectionist or never do it' camp...) :D

If you get caught up in the perfectionist trap, you will not enjoy the process! If you can let go of that, you will end up happily with a deck that is uniquely your own. :) It's all about the process! A millimeter here and there will take nothing away from your deck! Go for it!

Just what Padma said.

And, by the way, I love your handle. It makes me think of a steampunk Mae West, in a skintight uniform, piloting an airship.... :D

Beautiful... I may have to do my Wildwood!
