A Personnal Choice Of Decks

About leather cases I have one for each 22 Majors (Noblet & Dodal). They are very thick and hard enough to really protects cards. And just size fitted to block cards and prevents any moves.
Me too I made a photo album with 2 x 10 cards per page. A near professionnal material with a plastic film.
In fact as I am probably as "nut" as some of us, I planned to make a large scope of 20 Bateleur then 20 Papesse 20 Imperatrice ect...
It is really good for understanding origines and errors or other misdirectionning let's say.

I give you my choice after many go and back questionning and researchs.
By chronological order it gives:
1 VISCONTI SFORZA 1450
2 CATELIN GEOFFROY 1557
3 VIEVILLE 1643
4 NOBLET 1650
5 CHOSSON 1672
6 PAYEN J.1695
7 DODAL 1701
8 MADENIE 1709
9 PAYEN JP 1713
10 HERI 1718
11 GRIMAUD ARNOULT 1748
12 BURDEL 1751
13 CONVER 1760
14 LAURENT J.P 1800 ?
15 J. JERGER 1800 ?
16 BP GRIMAUD 1930
17 HADAR 1996
18 CAMOIN JODO 1997
19 RHODES SANCHEZ 2004
20 A NEW TAROT DECK (COMING SOON BUT... SURPRISE) 200.

Of course I could have choose to start with Cary Sheet but I am too attracted by Visconti Sforza beauty to resist. I don't pretend to be a scientific or historian. And Mammeluks cards don't sound to me enough.

I suppose that your personnal choice is different for each of you.

Un bonjour des frenchies

I wrote to the Flornoys and got this response:

Roxanne Flornoy said:
Hello Scott

The 52-card deck is indeed a deck, not a book. It is a faithful
reconstitution of the cards created in 1793-4 by Provost, who ran a
paper mill on the river which flows at the foot of the town of
Sainte-Suzanne. The woodblock used for printing the originals is housed
in a local museum just opposite the house where it was engraved. Mr.
Flornoy was able to obtain a print from this (fairly damaged) woodblock,
and from it he established a repaired black-line version, the aim being
to re-edit the cards to look as they did when new in 1793. The cards are
hand stencil-colored, as are the others he edits. The corners are square
and the back of the cards are plain, as were the originals.
I hope this information responds sufficiently to your question. If you
care for further details, don't hesitate to ask.

Future projects include a 72 card Noblet, nearly ready for printing in
an industrial version. After that, other historic decks are planned, but
for the moment its Noblet, very exciting because his tarot hasn't seen
the light of day for over 300 years!

Best wishes, Roxanne Flornoy

72 card deck? This must be a typo- she must mean that he is producing a 73 card deck.

Quoteth Taropedia:

There are five missing cards: i.e., the VI to X of the Swords suit

I am disappointed that it seems Mr. Flornoy will not "recreate" the missing cards. Because they are pips, it seems that he could do so without offending the integrity of the deck. I suspect that this scaled down deck would not sell nearly as well as a full deck would.

Lee

Perhaps it was a typo and she meant a 78-card deck. :)

hi tb

I can say in all honesty, they're much nicer in person.

Wow- the Dodal is larger than I thought it would be (the Noblet, smaller). I love the backs on the Noblet. Thanks for sharing.

update of sorts

Roxanne Flornoy writes in response to my question. Basically I asked her if there would be a "recreation" of the cards that are missing in the Noblet.

Hello again

Just so - the only missing cards are those you cite. They were recreated
after a close inspection of other historic swords to discern whatever
conventions might apply. As you pointed out, a responsable choice was
possible with these simpler images. When Noblet comes out, our sites
will announce the event...

Best, Roxanne

So apparently it will be a full deck after all. I do hope they find a publisher sooner rather than later.
