How do you pronnounce Tarot?

I once listened to a podcast where the hostess pronounced it that way - "Tarrit." She said she had been reading Tarrit cards for nearly 30 years and loved the imagery of Tarrit. I couldn't stand it after about 5 minutes. It was unbearable.

My forum name is a good one indeed It's part of my (German) grandfather's Polish surname and the oral familiy history goes that he couldn't pronounce it correctly himself and therefore finally got rid of it. But in fact Polish pronounciation is fairly straight forward, once you know the rules (like r+z = sh).

So it is Tesh-ease? Tissues? Interested as to why you do not call it Tarock as a German speaking person.

That's true, but that umlaut in Köln (Koeln) makes it tricky for non German speakers to pronounce.

Heh, I'm originally from just outside NYC and that's how everyone says 'Tarot.' I say 'Tarrit' too. D: If you ask for the Ta-row reader in the Boswash corridor people will look at you strangely. Ask for the Tarrit reader and the chances are you'll be pointed in the direction of the nearest New Age or coffee shop.

Out here in Phoenix or the West Coast it varies widely. People say 'Tarow' or 'Tarrit' or even 'Tarrot.' Everyone knows what the cards are.

Tarock and Tarot is not the same thing and I wouldn't like to mix them up.

taROH is how I say it. I admit that tarrow sounded a bit, um, weird to me when I heard it first on Youtube. Marcus Katz says taROH in his videos, and I was not aware of tarrow ;-) .

Btw, Köln and Cologne are both variations of the official Latin name, Colonia, given to the village when the Romans re-founded it as city. Natives call it Kölle anyway.

Important cities have different names in different languages, that's normal for Europeans, and it reflects the city´s international importance. Or, as already mentioned, in the case of Belgian or Alsacian places, the fact that they belonged to different countries at different times or that the country is multi-lingual.

If you think it's imposing your language on the people of Cologne to call their city by its English or French name, you'll have to call Germany Deutschland from now :-D

A proper English transliteration of "trzes" woud probbly be Chez. Almost like the game chess, but with a softer ending, with the phonemes t + sh + e + z.

In German the word "Tarock" is only used for the playing cards having french suits, plain pips and double-sided trumps with huge roman numbers. Decks with Italian or spanish suits, like TdM, and mainly being used as an esoteric tool are referred to as "Tarot", pronounced like in French. I think Tarock-like games are a variation of tarot that is orignially Austrian, while Tarot games came to Austria/Germany later and kept the French name for better distinction. (Someone please correkt me if that's wrong.)

And isn't it funny that the English Name Cologne is much closer to Roman original than the German name Köln? So trying to imitate the natives can sort of lead you further away from the "original".

I've never heard any variations of Tarot pronunciation, but listening to podcasts, I hear people say Seltic Cross instead of Keltic Cross. Seltic Cross sounds like a basketball move to me.

Well, even if one does consider Tarot; born from Thoth ... that is still a Greek version and incorrect as there is no such Greek God. It is based on ḏḥwty ...or Djehuti .
